The Lexington Herald-Leader seeks an innovative, dynamic Sports Editor to lead and elevate our local sports coverage. The ideal candidate will drive sophisticated, revelatory journalism focused on major sporting events—such as the Kentucky Derby and March Madness—while ensuring comprehensive and dominant coverage of the University of Kentucky’s sports programs, especially basketball and football. programs. This leader will champion multiplatform storytelling, foster a collaborative newsroom culture and leverage emerging AI technologies to expand our reach and impact.
This is a high-profile position in our Newsroom and in our commonwealth. We are fiercely competitive on a national level with our coverage. The ideal candidate will be innovative, strategic and have fire-in-the-belly to help keep our APSE Top 10-honored Sports Team in the upper echelon of achievement and success.
Key Responsibilities
- Editorial Leadership: Spearhead coverage of major local sporting events and University of Kentucky athletics, ensuring content is insightful, timely and deeply reported.
- Content Strategy: Develop and execute a vision for sophisticated, revelatory sports journalism that resonates with local audiences and sets the standard for excellence.
- Team Development: Mentor, inspire and manage a diverse team of reporters—guiding both seasoned journalists and those earlier in their careers to produce their best work.
- Digital Innovation: Oversee the integration of social media, video, podcasts and other multimedia formats to enhance storytelling and audience engagement.
- AI & Technology: Identify and implement artificial intelligence tools and data-driven approaches to strengthen reporting, streamline workflows, and deepen audience insights.
- Community Engagement: Build relationships with readers, coaches, athletes and local stakeholders to ensure coverage reflects the community’s passion and priorities.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other newsroom leaders to align sports coverage with broader editorial goals and initiatives. Collaboration also could include new media partnerships locally and around Kentucky.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in sports journalism, with a track record of producing impactful, high-quality content on deadline.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including mentoring and developing talent at all experience levels.
- Advanced proficiency in social media strategy, audience engagement and multiplatform content creation.
- Experience with multimedia storytelling, including video, audio, and interactive formats.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and their application in newsrooms, from content generation to analytics and audience targeting.
- Deep knowledge of Kentucky sports culture, especially University of Kentucky athletics and major local sporting events.
- Excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
