Position: Trending News Reporter

This position is focused on finding and reporting on the top news of the day. Breaking News Reporters identify and report on timely stories of interest to our audiences using news judgment, metrics, and social tools to find stories that will resonate.

The ideal candidate can work calmly under tight deadlines, deliver scoops, write quickly, make phone calls, dig up documents, be creative, and think about storytelling on different platforms while delivering sharp headlines. This role requires comfort with live blogs, listicles, quick enterprise stories, and proficiency in SEO.

This Trending News Reporter works Monday through Friday and sometimes helps out on holidays and weekends when needed. This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.

Minimum salary: $55,000

Responsibilities:

• Identify and report on top national news stories of the day and monitor real-time news.
• Write and report quickly and accurately, chasing down tips and answering readers’ questions.
• Work with coworkers to deliver news via stories, video, newsletters, and social media platforms.
• Use metrics to inform story choices and shape strategies.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of 2 years' reporting/newsroom experience.
• Able to file quickly and accurately.
• Strong command of grammar and style.
• Passionate about viral news, breaking news, and important topics of the day.
• Comfortable in fast-moving, intense situations and using social media to enhance reporting.
• Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
• Excel in a fast-paced news environment and understand the digital-first mission.
• Collaborate well with others in a mostly remote team environment.
• This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this role will range between $26.45 and $33.65. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
