The Associate Network Engineer is a technical staff member in the Network Services group in Information Technology. The Associate Network Engineer contributes to the architecture, design, and configuration of network-related systems to meet the business needs of UMass Lowell.
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Network Services, the Associate Network Engineer assists in the execution of the overall vision and strategy related to University network systems. They are responsible for supporting short and long term network infrastructure initiatives including wired and wireless network configuration, assisting in strategies for integrating new network-based services, and supporting all network-related initiatives.
They work closely with the Network Services team, project managers, and information security staff to provide robust and highly available network services. As required, they also configure wired and wireless network equipment, troubleshoot end-user network issues using software and hardware tools, repair and install network equipment, and provide end-user support related to the delivery of network connectivity. They are integral in the overall services delivered to all internal and external users of UMass Lowell’s IT service catalog.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Associates degree or 3-5 years of experience in a large Information Technology environment providing on-site network-related support activities to end users.
- Requires “Extreme Switching - Installation and Configuration” certification (or similar), or ability to achieve this certification within 6 months.
- Requires ITIL Foundations certification, or the ability to achieve this certification within 3 months.
- Requires extraordinary customer service skills, as well as the desire and ability to go “above-and-beyond” to ensure customer success.
- Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to clearly and articulately explain technical concepts to non-technical clients.
- Experience working as part of a team to achieve group success.
- Strong problem-solving and research skills.
- Two or more years of hands-on experience supporting wired and wireless network connectivity systems in an Enterprise or University setting.
- Two or more years of hands-on experience with physical cabling, cabling standards, copper terminations, and related technologies.
- Requires proficiency with operating and troubleshooting network connectivity issues in Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Android, and iOS.
- Working knowledge of DNS, DHCP, and data network technologies as they relate to the delivery of network services.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting network equipment from Extreme Networks and HPE/Aruba.
- Industry-recognized certifications from Extreme, Aruba, or similar.
- Experience with network technologies such as firewalls, authentication systems, and VoIP solutions.
- Experience with network management tools such as Aruba ClearPass and ExtremeCloud IQ/NetSight.
- Experience using test equipment and diagnostic tools to resolve wired and wireless issues, including hand-held Fluke meters, Wireshark, and the analysis of packet captures.
