The University of Mary Washington is seeking an innovative and collaborative candidate for the position of University Librarian.
The University Librarian will work with leadership across campus to enhance Simpson Library’s role as an intellectual and cultural research center in support of UMW’s Strategic Vision – 2022-2027. Additionally, the University Librarian fosters a collaborative relationship with students, faculty, staff and administrators to advance the Library’s essential role in teaching, learning, and research across the university.
The University Librarian is responsible for all functions of the library, including strategic planning, facilities, fiscal management and budgeting (approximately $2.3 million), personnel, and the development of the library’s collections, programs, and services. They will be responsible for the supervision, professional development, and evaluation of the library staff which consists of eleven librarians and eight classified staff members. The University Librarian reports to the Provost and is a member of the senior academic leadership team.
The University Librarian works with the head of collections and the subject librarians on the analysis and evaluation of current collections and their formats. They meet with the deans, department chairs, and faculty regularly to discuss their needs for library resources and services. The University Librarian is also responsible for providing leadership along with other offices and units for digital and information fluencies. The University Librarian actively participates in the Virtual Library of Virginia consortium (VIVA) and serves as a representative to the Library Advisory Committee. In addition, they support efforts to foster diversity and inclusion in library, university, and professional contexts.
Simpson Library has a collection of 375,000 physical volumes, 450,000 e-books, 200 databases, 130,000 streaming videos, and 100,000 journals and an extensive array of electronic information resources. The library is an active participant in VIVA, a selective depository for U.S. and Virginia publications, and an essential resource for the central Virginia region.
Required KSAs / Competencies / Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic libraries.
- Demonstrated active involvement in the profession (as demonstrated by conference presentations, publications, or through participation in consortiums and partnerships).
Preferred KSA’s / Competencies / Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement library services, policies and procedures, manage complex budgets, and supervise staff in a college or university library.
- Demonstrated collaborative leadership style in the library, university, and with surrounding communities.
- Knowledge of current trends and issues in open scholarship and science, open access, open data, and scholarly communication.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and assess new programs.
Required Education:
A Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.
Required Experience:
- 7-10 years of experience working in library leadership and administration at a post-secondary education or an appropriate equivalent.
- Experience in assessment, strategic planning, and library organization.
Preferred Education:
Doctoral degree or additional academic qualifications in a relevant subject area.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with space planning and library renovation.
- Experience supporting and sustaining an active University archives program, including digital archiving policies, preservation, and workflows.
- Experience attracting external funding and working with University Advancement.
