Job Title: Instructional Media Specialist Reports to: Principal Dept./School: Assigned Campus Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Pay Grade: Instructional 2, 192 days Date Revised: 1/28/2020 Primary Purpose: Provide services and manage resources that allow students and staff to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems and promote learning related to the instructional program of the school. Work with administration to ensure that the school library/media center is relevant to students, helpful to staff, and open to the community. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Master’s degree from an accredited university in Library Science, Instructional Technology, or other related curriculum area Google Educator Certification (Levels 1 & 2 preferred) Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to instruct students and manage behavior Ability to train teachers on the use of resources and technology tools Strong organizational and interpersonal skills Knowledge of library science Experience: Two years in an education/training environment Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instruction Identify needs for the school library/media center as they relate to campus and district goals, and plan accordingly to meet those needs. Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students on the discovery and ethical use of resources and digital media. Provide professional development for teachers on the availability and use of various instructional resources. Assist teachers in creating a learning environment that is rich in media and technological resources for students. Support a culture of innovative practices and current resources in the library/media center by attending appropriate training sessions, and sharing information at related meetings. Interact with students and staff to promote a love of reading and research and to create positive attitudes toward the school library/media center. Library/Media Center Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources. Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students. Administration Keep track of records, reports, and other documentation as needed. Comply with campus and district regulations, board policy, and federal and state laws as they relate to libraries and media services. Communication Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors, staff, and students. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, parents, and the community. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage involvement from parents and the community. Promote positive perceptions of the school and district through various media. Other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise clerical aide(s), student aides, and volunteers. Working Conditions: Mental Demands/ Physical Demands / Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Complete occasional light lifting of books and boxes. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Approved Educator Preparation Program (EEP) completion Master’s degree from accredited college or university Valid Texas librarian or learning resources specialist certificate or endorsement Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of library science Ability to instruct and manage student behavior Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Experience: Two years teaching experience Experience in library/media center in public school setting Major Responsibilities and Duties: Instruction Provide group instruction and individual guidance to students to help them locate resources and use research techniques. Consult teachers on appropriate use of materials and help them schedule materials for classroom instruction. Serve as information resource for users of library/media center materials and provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of campus and district learning resources. Library Programs Effectively plan school library program to meet identified needs. Assist in preparation of bibliographies and curriculum guides. Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources. Maintain schedules for instructional television programs and encourage use of video programs for educational purposes. Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement. Student Management Carry out discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations. Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward school library. Administration Compile, budget and cost estimates based on documented program needs. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the library/media services area. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes based on the findings. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Communication Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
