Arlington County’s Police Department (ACPD) is seeking a Police Policy Writer to operate as the primary writer, researcher, and editor of the Arlington County Police Department’s policy manual. This employee will collaborate with command staff, internal subject matter experts, and the community to ensure the Department’s policies are aligned with current law and industry best practices. This employee will be assigned to the Office of Professional Responsibility. The Police Policy Writer supports the Department’s accreditation efforts by maintaining an up-to-date policy manual and assisting with collection of standards proofs. This position will require a strong writer who is self-motivated and able to regularly meet deadlines.

Polygraph & Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check as well as a polygraph examination will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position is onsite and requires the incumbent to work from the office.

Qualifications
Minimum:
Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field; and considerable experience in the general research of public policy or experience in policy writing/management in a law enforcement planning or research position.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master’s degree or higher may be substituted for some of the experience requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
- Experience in writing, editing, and researching various topics, preferably in a legal, criminal justice, or public safety field;
- Experience composing and updating policies and/or standard operating procedures;
- Experience working with policy management software systems, preferably PowerDMS;
- Experience working with confidential information in a secured environment;
- Affiliation or certification with a recognized policy management organization.
