About Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy One of four pillars at the Milken Institute, Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy advises individuals, corporations, and foundations on the most strategic ways to ensure their philanthropic investments make an equitable, transformative impact, and offers tools and recommendations for making philanthropy more effective. Since its launch in 2015, the pillar has influenced more than $3.1 billion of philanthropic capital. In addition to in-depth research, reports, and guides, we design and build programs including funding initiatives, research collaboratives, large-scale innovation programs, and high-level events. Finally, we foster peer learning communities to accelerate knowledge-sharing and promote partnership. Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy’s three portfolio of programmatic work include SPARC (Science Philanthropy Accelerator for Research and Collaboration), Environmental & Social Innovation (ESI), and Philanthropy Leadership Collective (PLC). About the Position As a key member of the Strategic Philanthropy pillar’s core team, the Director, Marketing and Communications, will design and implement communications and marketing initiatives to increase awareness and enhance engagement both internally across the organization and externally to the philanthropic and impact investment ecosystem. The Director will oversee four key facets of work: overall pillar communication and marketing strategy, including thought leadership and brand elevation; digital content and platforms; writing and editing; and portfolio and project-specific content and campaigns. The Director will work with colleagues across the pillar and develop and implement a compelling content and dynamic storytelling strategy for a consistent, unified message in support of our work and our leaders. The Director will ensure the development of publications (reports, articles, etc.) are produced at the highest quality within the designated project timeline. The Director will have direct management of a team member and provide coordination to an additional communication lead. The Director will also work in close partnership with the Milken Institute’s central marketing and communications team Responsibilities In partnership with pillar portfolio leads and central marketing and communications colleagues, the Director will be responsible for: Developing, implementing, and evaluating annual internal and external communications and marketing plans including an editorial calendar in collaboration with team leaders Supporting development of leaders’ written thought leadership, social presence, and preparations for high-level engagements Creating and refreshing core messaging documents, key collateral, website copy, etc. Crafting content for newsletters, pillar-specific social channels, press releases, etc. Developing marketing campaigns to drive engagement with existing and new audiences Establishing metrics to determine measurable outcomes of the effectiveness of communications strategies and initiatives Identifying and implementing multiple communication channels to create momentum and awareness for all publications Overseeing the development, distribution, and maintenance of all content including, but not limited to reports, articles, newsletters, website, videos, and pillar intranet Creating workflows specific to teams that set reasonable deadlines, improve performance, and shorten delivery timelines Participating in the creation and execution of standardized communication processes Conducting quality control on all communications Managing and mentoring Milken Institute Strategic Philanthropy communications team with a focus on developing a culture of trust and professional growth Requirements 12+ years of relevant work experience Graduate degree in a relevant field preferred Demonstrated excellence in writing skills, both for traditional and digital content Deep understanding of identifying target audience and generating effective communication for relevant channels to maximize reach Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies Track record of creating, developing, driving, and implementing multifaceted strategic communication plans that position and elevate the awareness of organization Strong interpersonal and client relationship/customer service skills Superior project management skills with ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines Results-focused individual who sets success metrics at the beginning of any project and maps to them, reports back and adjusts strategy as necessary Understanding of time management, team capacity, and allocation of resources against projects Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple work streams Effective partnership development skills and ability to work with multiple, high-level internal external stakeholders Ability to facilitate and coordinate diverse individuals to solve specific problems Comfortable with public speaking, either in small meeting setting or for large audiences Demonstrated excellence in planning, presentation development, and facilitating High intellectual capacity that can be and has been applied to learning new areas of philanthropic investment and related fields Strong ability to work on a fast-paced collaborative team and be independently proactive Personal attitude that includes being entrepreneurial, action-oriented, collaborative, flexible, with a willingness to adapt to changing situations and a good sense of humor People manager experience preferred Working Conditions & Travel Requirements This position will work in a professional office environment on a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to the Washington, DC, office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change at the Institute’s sole discretion. This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. International along with domestic travel is possible.Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.
