Job Description A new Austin community newsroom supported by The Texas Tribune is hiring an editor-in-chief. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist passionate about Austin, local news, and community engagement. Responsibilities include building and managing a newsroom, developing editorial strategies, fostering community relationships, and representing the newsroom publicly.
The Role The editor-in-chief will establish and lead a community-focused newsroom, oversee daily editorial functions, develop partnerships, and ensure timely, impactful journalism tailored to Austin. They will also manage staffing, workflows, and community engagement activities.
Responsibilities and Priorities
Develop and implement an editorial vision for a community-oriented newsroom. Hire, manage, and mentor journalists dedicated to serving Austin. Coordinate membership, subscriptions, and revenue-generating events. Engage with the community through meetings and events. Analyze metrics to guide strategy and audience growth. Maintain daily operations and ensure transparency and inclusivity. Represent the newsroom publicly and manage the budget. Ideal Candidate Profile Entrepreneurial, experienced in local journalism, adept at managing ambiguity, fostering partnerships, and committed to diversity and community service. Passionate about mentoring journalists and using data to inform decisions.
Location Based in Austin, Texas.
