We are seeking candidates for the position of Project Designer (1006) - New Automotive Vehicles in the AEE&M/Bus Vehicle Engineering department.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION
This position’s primary responsibility is assisting all technical aspects of operational functions for new vehicle procurement projects. As a project designer involved in engineering projects, this position is responsible for defining and coordinating in-house tasks on a large scale. As an assistant researcher, this Project Designer is responsible for researching engineering concepts that are of high complexity and can be incorporated into specification development or other related activities. The Project Designer must have extensive knowledge of engineering and business practices applicable to leading new vehicle initiatives.
This position is responsible for undertaking engineering assignments that are considered to be of “normal complexity” in size and scope. This position is further responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, statistical methods, audits, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides engineering analysis, detailed design reviews, inspection support for automotive vehicles. Provides conceptual, preliminary and final designs of automotive systems.Writes specifications and Request for Proposals and review designs for all devices and systems including preparing proof of concept for all new devices and systems. Generates and coordinates design plans (Bulletins) and specifications for in-house and 3rd party forces.Reviews, monitors and performs oversight and witnessing of factory testing of automotive vehicles.. Takes necessary action to correct unusual equipment operations and recommend standard preventative maintenance procedures.Conducts preliminary engineering site walks with various parties, and reviews and approves third party drawings and specifications.Supports system integration of subsystems from different suppliers for compatibility and functional performance.Designs various types of systems including but limited to utility vehicles and buses.Manages the performance of 3rd party technical services.Initiates, upgrades and implements design standards.Reviews and approves 3rd party designs for conformity with established standards.Generates written memoranda, technical reports, audits, etc. in professional, effective manner.Participates in periodic review of drawings and specifications.Provides, promotes, and enforces safe working conditions in accordance with accepted safety practices and procedures.Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.Performs other duties as assignedDISCIPLINE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Consult with senior level engineer/supervision in project definition.Exercise good judgment in application of basic engineering and quality assurance principles.Assist in the preparation of budgets for proposed projects and work to be accomplished through third partyGeneral written memoranda, technical reports, specifications, audits, etc. in a professional manner.Interface with Governmental Agencies and, as necessary, other transit Authorities concerning pertinent matters.Adapt to team efforts where indicated in resolution of matters not suitable for singular contribution.Provide technical assistance to vehicle maintenance personnel upon request.Writes specifications and Request for Proposals and review designs for all automotive vehcile technology systems including preparing proof of concept. Generates and coordinates design plans and specifications for in-house and 3rd party forces.Define, implement, and document new or more effective maintenance procedures for an assigned fleet of vehicles.Utilize computerized maintenance records and systems as an aid in implementing additional proactive maintenance practices and reducing the frequency of mechanical related service disruptions.Provides management with operational data-driven reports that will establish and track efficiency of project(s) and provide basis for management decisions.QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree, in Engineering or related field plus a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience required.An equivalent combination of education and experience (two years of related experience equating to one year of post High School education), may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills required.Computer skills required. Must be proficient in MS software applications, including Excel, Access, Outlook and Word.Valid driver’s license required.Progressively responsible relevant work experience with new vehicles in a transit or railroad environment preferred.BENEFITS
