Vascular Access –
Built on a history of innovation, our Arrow® brand of technically advanced vascular access devices are renowned throughout the world. Many of our vascular access products have antimicrobial and antithrombogenic protection designed to reduce vascular-related complications and include long and short dwell central venous catheters (CVC), sheath introducers, arterial lines, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), as well as specialty devicesand an advanced vascular positioning system to facilitate precise placement of a PICC or CVC near the heart. Position Summary
The Director, Product Design is responsible for leading the vision, strategy, and execution of product design activities within the organization. This pivotal role ensures the creation of innovative, user-focused, and commercially viable medical devices. The Director oversees multidisciplinary design teams, guides product conceptualization, and integrates feedback from stakeholders across the business. This position demands a deep understanding of design principles, regulatory requirements, and user-centric methodologies, ensuring that all products meet high-quality standards and exceed market expectations.
Principal Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Team Management
• Design Vision & Strategy
o Develop and champion a compelling design vision that aligns with overall business objectives and product roadmaps.
o Define design standards, guidelines, and methodologies to promote consistency and excellence in product design.
• Team Leadership & Development
o Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing product, machine, and fixture design team (engineers, designers, technicians, etc.)
o Cultivate a collaborative and creative environment, setting clear goals and performance metrics for team members to improve both the quality and quantity of the team output.
• Budget & Resource Allocation
o Oversee budgeting and resource planning for the product design function.
o Ensure effective deployment of tools, technologies, and external partnerships to maximize productivity and innovation.
• Thought Leadership
o Stay abreast of emerging design trends, industry best practices, and relevant technological advancements.
o Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and thought-leadership forums to promote design excellence.
Product Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Design Process Management
o Oversee end-to-end product design activities, from concept generation to final design handover. Groups design inputs into logical groupings and produces product designs to ensure that all design needs are met and fully compliant to applicable Design Control Procedures. Utilize design experimentation, simulation tools and technology expertise to evaluate critical aspects of product design and provide technical guidance on specification development in alignment with project execution timelines.
o Establish and maintain design milestones, ensuring alignment with project timelines and business objectives.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration
o Work closely with Marketing, and Concept development team to gather user requirements and translate them into actionable design inputs. Incorporate user feedback into iterative design refinements to deliver intuitive, safe, and effective medical devices.
o Support the creation of technical documentation describing the understanding of Design Inputs to Design Outputs including the creation of Essential Design Outputs.
o Partner with Design Assurance and Design Transfer Team to ensure design feasibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Project Management & Communication
o Lead cross-functional product design project teams in conjunction with Project Management office and Technical Leads, coordinating schedules, resources, and deliverables.
o Provide regular updates to senior leadership on project progress, design iterations, and potential roadblocks.
Education / Experience Requirements
• Bachelors Degree required in an applicable fiield, graduate degree preferred.
• Specific demonstrated technical expertise in mechanical, functional and/or technology disciplines.
Ten years of relevant experience required.
Previous managerial experience leading multiple teams requirred.
Strong experience in the design of injection molded components and material selection for use in medical devices.
Specialized Skills / Other Requirements
• Ability to engaged effectively in a matrix environment, with ownership and accountability to project timelines.
• Proficiency in simulation tools including finite element analysism, design of experiments etc.
• Strong working knowldedge of processes and equipment common to medical device manufacturing; examples include additive manufacturing, machining, extrusion, injection molding, coating, adhesive and thermal bonding, etc.
• Experience with and working knowledge of ISO9000, FDA and GMP requirements.

o Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging exploration of new materials, technologies, and design methodologies.
o Evaluate design outcomes, gather lessons learned, and integrate improvements into future processes.
• Quality & Regulatory Requirements
o Ensure product designs comply with applicable medical device regulations (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485).
o Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure design documentation, risk assessments, and validation protocols meet business and regulatory standards.
• Risk Management
o Utilize risk assessments using tools such as DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to inform and guide design
o Proactively identify potential safety, usability, or compliance issues and develop mitigation strategies.
