POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Managing Editor-Politics is responsible for the development and planning of coverage on all Newsday platforms. The AME supervises the Washington, D.C., team, the deputy AME for local politics, and the environmental beat. The candidate also will supervise the Albany team when the senior AME is out. This AME works across departmental lines, coordinating coverage with Newsday’s online platforms, alternative storytelling team and NewsdayTV. The AME is responsible for mentoring, training, motivating and evaluating team members to provide the highest quality, most relevant content to Newsday consumers and the community across platforms. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Work with team of reporters and deputy AME to create unique content that leads to digital subscriber growth.
  • Strategize ways to create access points for audiences that lead to more reader engagement.
  • Coordinate, plan and present D.C., local and national news in budget meetings.
  • Prepare packs for daily and weekend news meetings.
  • Plan and direct daily- and long-term enterprise.
  • Lead election coverage planning and execution.
  • Edit daily and weekend digital and Page 1 or top news stories/packages.
  • Work with reporters on the front end for alternative storytelling.
  • Work with the weekend editor and other editorial departments to coordinate coverage and placement of stories in the paper and online.
  • Supervise and provide performance feedback.
  • Assist the senior AME with administrative and managerial duties; participate in higher-level management meetings.
  • Understand and promulgate goals of the department and company.
  • Participate in recruitment and hiring for the newsroom.
  • Set daily staffing requirements.
  • Interact with various departments, including news executives, online editors, layout-copy editors, Human Resources and other staff departments on administrative and other job-related responsibilities.
  • Help develop and oversee multimedia projects for online (alternative storytelling, social media, etc.).

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must have:

  • Excellent line- and content-editing skills.
  • Strong management and journalism skills.
  • Proven, sound news judgment.
  • Experience leading projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of journalism ethics.
  • Understanding of the ever-evolving media industry.
  • Knowledge of multimedia trends, especially alternative storytelling and social media.
  • Knowledge of Long Island preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least 10 years’ newsroom management experience or related experience.
  • Editing, reporting, multimedia and supervising a journalism team at a medium- to large-sized media outlet.
  • Experience in local news coverage.
  • Experience at overseeing local, state and national political teams.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employees are generally required to work in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week.
  • Ability to travel throughout Long Island and the surrounding.
  • Driver’s license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support business needs.

COMPENSATION

  • The annual salary for this role is $150,000, commensurate with experience.
