Job Summary:

The College of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is seeking a Marketing and Communications Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Marketing and Communications Manager works closely with and reports to the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) School Head and stakeholders to develop, execute, and evaluate a strategic communications and outreach plan to create, grow, and maintain an engaged student and alumni community. In addition, this position works closely with the school's Industry Relations Managers to expand efforts to increase engagement with the school.

This position leads digital communications and is responsible for content creation for the School. Content creation includes print and digital materials. This position will work strategically with the College of Engineering (COE) Marketing and Communications Team to best implement EECS projects and achievements across COE collateral. Specific goals for student engagement include generating interest and participation in school-sponsored clubs, industry networking events, and curricular and co-curricular experiential education opportunities. The school has a strong alumni base, many of whom participate on the industry advisory board and in other support roles. Building community within this group and helping to spur engagement with faculty and students is an important responsibility for this position.

Key Responsibilities

40% Strategic Student and Internal Communications

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with Ecampus, student groups, College of Engineering, and other campus partners to ensure the schools communications and outreach align with and support their efforts and goals.
  • Develops and executes internal communication plans that support the Colleges strategic goals and initiatives including COEs commitment to building an increasingly inclusive, collaborative, diverse community centered on student success
  • Creates engaging content for internal communication channels, including newsletters, emails, and other platforms.
  • Collaborates with different departments to gather information and content for internal and, potentially, external communications.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to communicate key messages and updates to employees.
  • Coordinates to ensure consistent messaging and timely dissemination of information.
  • Manages internal communication campaigns and initiatives to promote student engagement.
  • Monitors and analyzes the effectiveness of internal communication efforts and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Provides guidance and support to internal stakeholders on communication best practices.
  • Provides assistance as necessary to other members of the COE external relations team, including but not limited to: providing content for external newsletters, providing proofreading services, and providing content for social media.

40% Industry Relations Marketing and Communications

  • Works with stakeholders, school, and college leadership to expand the schools marketing and outreach programs to engage industry to increase opportunities for industry sponsorships, internships and employment, and faculty research partnerships.
  • Develops content and production of materials aimed at industry representatives for the schools publications, mailings, newsletters, photography, and social media
  • Helps planning and organizes content for newsletter and associated landing pages to facilitate external communications
  • Ensures units university branding consistency across a broad set of physical and digital assets created and deployed by an array of staff and faculty
  • Creates and maintains of branded giveaways and professional wear

10% Website Maintenance

  • In partnership with the College of Engineering web team, supports the schools website by developing content, ensuring content is up to date and accurate as well as updating and maintaining web pages to ensure the general integrity of the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science website content and structure

5% Other Responsibilities

  • Role includes some onsite support of unit events and may interact with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Portrait photography as needed
  • Hires contractors as needed

5% Service and Professional Development

  • Serves on committees as appropriate.
  • Engages in professional development activities to stay current on the advances in the fields of marketing, online education, publishing, and new media.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelors degree in English Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Engineering, Science, or a related field.
  • Three years professional writing, marketing, public relations and communications experience
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and teamwork skills, including writing and editing for varied audiences (including highly technical).
  • Understanding of design principles as related to the development of marketing materials.
  • Three years creative experience with Adobe suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator, etc) and/or comparable tools/applications.
  • Prior experience with third-party communication platforms (e.g. Mailchip, ActOn, etc.)
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for students, staff, faculty, and stakeholders.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Work outside of standard hours required occasionally in support of school events. Hybrid work allowed through agreement with supervisor.
