VP COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING (UA-VPCM-IUBLA)

Job Summary

As the leader of the Information Technology communications team within the Office of the Vice President for Communications and Marketing supporting the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, the IT Communications Manager plays a pivotal role in communicating internal news about tech changes that impact staff, faculty and students, as well as externally about the research and international impact of IU's technology focus.

Department-Specific ResponsibilitiesOversees the development, implementation and management of all work for the team, including but not limited to content development for multiple platforms, communications about major tech changes, and VP support.Leads a team of 4 full-time communications and marketing generalists and 3 part-time staff who prepare communications (web, email, e-newsletters and other content) for the Vice President for IT as well as UITS communications to support full use of IU's technology resources.Supervises content development for major tech changes such as software rollouts and software retirements, ensuring effective communication to all affected constituents.Supervises content development for IT News website and bi-weekly UITS Monitor.Leads content development for Vice President for IT preparing major speeches and email communications for their use.Interfaces with UITS collaborators to prioritize key messages.Interfaces with UCM colleagues to ensure message alignment.Translates complex tech information into clear, actionable messages for lay people.Oversees and manages UITS and VPIT web content. All updates to UITS sites come through the IT comms area.Supports IT communications for incoming students via Orientation materials. These materials ensure a successful beginning at IU for new students.Serves on Safe IT, Back-to-School and Emergency preparedness committees.Oversees media pitches and media requests.Handles Tech Exec of the Year sponsorship with IBJ and TechPoint.Oversees social media integration with larger VPCM team.General ResponsibilitiesDirects operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department, large multi-faceted department, or multiple departments.Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, and directs the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and manages processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.Reviews drafts of communications and projects and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department.Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.Assists in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.Monitors industry trends and best practices, makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager, and assists in implementing recommendations to optimize operations and progress toward objectives.May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Leaders.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
