About the Department and/or College

The School of Theatre & Dance (SoTD), within the Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts, seeks applications for a full-time 12-month staff Scenic Studio (shop) Supervisor. Ideally, the successful candidate will begin full-time service on September 1, 2024.

Major/Essential Functions

The position works with the faculty technical director and reports to staff production manager and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the scenic studios (wood, metal, properties, and painting), including the construction, installation, and maintenance of scenic elements for all theatre and dance productions; supervises all scenic studio staff, which includes student undergraduate and graduate production assistants and the allotted payroll; trains personnel and manages backstage operations; models professional standards and adheres to applicable safety codes and practices; oversees the studio's purchasing of materials and supplies; manages scenic and props stock and storage on and off site; consults with the production manager, faculty technical director, and the associate director of productions on scope, labor, and resource allocation.

Position Duties:

Collaborate with School personnel to realize season productions.Lead the construction and fabrication of scenic elements, including carpentry, metalworking, rigging, automation, props, and scenic art.Train and supervise scenic employees and student crews according to industry, institutional, and safety standards.Tracks and reports the progress of the construction/implementation of scenic process.Manage safe operations and maintenance of all studio equipment and machinery.Maintain and manage an organized inventory of materials, tools, equipment, and existing stock.Attends and participates in season planning efforts, staff meetings, and other production-related meetings.Work with the department safety officer to follow all TTU and industry safety policies.Periodically assist facilities manager with events in theatre and dance buildings.Occasional evenings and weekends required.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

One or more years of professional experience supervising or managing a scenic shop for live entertainment or educational environment.Proficiency in scenic construction techniques, including wood working, metal working, and props construction.Proficiency in safe rigging techniques and/or scenic automation.Experience in digitally assisted fabrication, such as CNC, 3D printing, Laser Cutting, and/or other technologies.Certification/Training in ETCP or OSHA standards.Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.Proficiency in CAD programs, either Vectorworks or AutoCAD.Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques, personnel management, collaborative best practices, and leadership.A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse populations.Must have a valid driver's license to transport scenic/props stock to and from storage.Must be able to lift 50 pounds and climb ladders.
