Cornell University College of Human Ecology

is seeking a Lecturer/Director for the Digital Design and Fabrication Studio (DDFS). The Director, responsible for developing and implementing the strategic direction of the DDFS in conjunction with faculty and college leadership, will serve as the instructor of record and provide design instruction in both workshop and classroom settings and will assist faculty in developing materials and resources for courses.We are looking for a candidate enthusiastic about mentoring students with budding design interests, who is motivated about working collaboratively with fellow design specialists across campus to create an environment that fosters ideas and experimentation. The successful candidate will be highly motivated with experience managing a cross-functional team, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience with design and fabrication practices and familiarity with administrative roles in higher education is a plus.The director oversees and facilitates studio operations and activities including: developing and delivering instruction on studio tools (hand tools, power tools, computer controlled cutter, printers and other devices), studio-related software and safety workshops, engaging faculty across the university, ensuring that student educational goals are met, managing the unit budget, and supervising studio staff.The position is a full-time, 12 month benefits-eligible, non-tenure track academic professional, with an expected start date in the Spring, 2020. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Cornell University provides a generous benefits package, including vacation, health and personal leave, educational benefits, group health, dental, vision and life insurance, and retirement benefits.Required QualificationsMaster’s Degree in design and/or product development, architecture, engineering or related degreeMinimum 5 years’ experience in higher education administration, including operations management, or similar technical/teaching roleMust have experience working with students, including teaching, advising, and mentoringExperience with equipment commonly used in wood and light metal shop environments (band saws, scroll saws, sanders, table saw, joiner, shaper, planer, CNC, Bridge mill, with grinders, sanders, bending, and cutting tools for light and small metal stock)Advanced understanding of safety requirements and training programs.Understanding of mechanical concept development and design, rapid prototyping (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, etc.) and advanced manufacturing processes.Experience with applicable technologies and/or software, i.e., CAD, 3D software (e.g., Solid works, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Aspire 9.5, Auto CAD 2019, Autodesk Inventor, Corel Draw x7, Insight 11.0, Layout 2016, Revit 2019, Rhinoceros 5, SketchUp 2016, Style builder 2016, Optitex PDS 2D/3D)Successful candidate will require excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York, is an inclusive, dynamic, and innovative Ivy League university and New York’s land-grant institution.
