Position Function:

The Associate Director of Design Services directs and coordinates the design phase of campus capital improvement projects.

Salary Grade : 17

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Directs and coordinates design services for capital projects related to campus facilities.2. Maintains the architectural components of the MSU campus standards.3. Provides a comprehensive physical planning and review process for the development of building design from project initiation to construction documents.4. Develops initial facilities program guidance during pre-design phase for all major and minor capital projects based on an assessment of campus requirements, the existing facility inventory, and master plan guidelines.5. Leads process for professional and construction manager selection. Develops effective and efficient request for proposal procedures for projects.6. Develop and maintain project budgets during design phase along with confirmation of funding sources. Coordinate and review estimates during each phase of design.7. Facilitate transition from design phase to construction phase with project managers.8. Responsible for ensuring required approvals are received during the design phase. This includes but is not limited to MDAH, IHL, State Fire Marshal, MDEQ, etc9. Coordinate plan reviews with users, stakeholders and other campus groups.10. Ensures that design professional complies with the MSU standards and the campus master plan along with applicable industry codes, laws, standards, and design practices.11. Assists with long range planning efforts to ensure campus development adheres to the University's long term strategic goals.12. Performs related duties as assigned.

Supervisory ResponsibilityFull supervisory responsibilities with direct and indirect reports

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Building Science, Engineering, Construction Project Administration or related field.Experience: 3 years experience in the planning and design of all interior and exterior components of buildings and building systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in related fieldProfessional RegistrationContract Administrator certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:• Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities• Ability to foster a cooperative work environment• Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures• Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures• Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals• Employee development and performance management skills• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications• Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Occasional and/or light lifting required. Limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards.

Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.

Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to no more than 25 pounds.
