Job postingsLibrary Assistant IVBack to search results Apply now Job no: 978698Work type: Support StaffPay Grade:11Major Administrative Unit / College:LibrariesDepartment:Libraries 10056536Sub Area:AP- ProfessionalsSalary:50549.00Location: East LansingCategories: Library/Museums/Archives, Administrative Professionals- AP, Full Time (90-100%), UnionPosition SummaryThis Library Assistant IV position is a split assignment that coordinates and supports the workflows in the Stacks Maintenance and Circulation units at the Michigan State University Libraries.Reporting to the Head of Access Services - Duties include:+ Coordinating the workflow of the entire Stacks Maintenance unit.+ Building book trucks, conducting book sweeps, shelving books, pulling books.+ Walking through shelves conducting shelf checks and monitoring for overcrowding. Discuss crowding concerns with Head of Access Services.+ Pull and shift books as needed to address overcrowding.+ Hiring, scheduling, training and supervising Stacks Maintenance student workers.+ Creating, monitoring and adjusting student budget.+ Working on various library projects, as assigned.Reporting to the Head of Circulation – Duties include:+ Handling questions about Circulation’s policies, overdue fines, etc.+ Referring library users to other library departments (requiring broad knowledge of library functions and policies).+ During assigned hours, directing Circulation Department workflow.+ Supervising, training, and coordinating the work of student employees at the Circulation public service desk and covering the student desk as needed.+ Opening and closing of the MSU Main Library, including clearing all areas of the Main Library of library users before closing.+ Processing requests for patrons including Remote storage requests, paging request, holds & media collection requests.+ Creating, interpreting, and troubleshooting complex computer records.+ Collecting payments and handling the cash register, including daily accounting.+ During assigned hours, is responsible for Main Library security and emergency procedures, often working with campus police (thefts and other crimes, tornado warning, fire, etc.).+ Providing staff support to student employees in branch libraries and Main Library units when those areas have no regular staff working (nights and weekends).+ Investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving problems with staff computers and programs, library security system, automated moveable shelving, as well as problems with public computers, printers, and other equipment throughout the Main Library.+ Reporting facilities problems to appropriate campus departments (plumbing, elevators, electrical, etc.).+ Shelving books and loading books to bins/carts from return boxes, which involves pushing heavy carts.+ Fulfilling Controlled Digital Lending requests during assigned hours.+ Working on a computer over 50 percent of the time.+ Working on various library projects, as assigned.The MSU Libraries values diversity of thought, perspective and experience and is actively committed to a culture of inclusion and respect. Additionally, the work between Stacks Maintenance and Circulation is not always an even divide, meaning the successful candidate may spend more time working in Circulation during one semester and more time working in Stacks Maintenance another semester. The work hours are variable; the schedule varies but it is assigned (not flexible) and includes some or all of the following hours: daytime (Stacks and Circulation), nights until midnight (Circulation), weekends (Circulation), and holidays (Circulation).Minimum RequirementsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an office setting; experience with integrated library systems; experience with the Library of Congress call number system and shelving; experience within the last one to two years working a public service desk in an academic library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired QualificationsAbility to collaborate well with others and help to foster a welcoming environment; detail oriented with high level of accuracy; ability to identify and resolve problems exercising excellent judgment; ability to handle varied, multiple, and competing project priorities. Experience with supervising and/or training others. Knowledge of the following computer software/websites: FOLIO, print.msu.edu, ILLiad, the MSU Library online catalog, and MSU Library electronic resources. Detailed familiarity with MSU Library policies and University Enterprise Business System (EBS).
