We are looking for an editor with a big brain who thinks across fields and genres of journalism, and can commission and edit work from a diverse range of newsmakers, scholars, novelists, comedians, activists, scientists and people at the center of important stories in the United States and abroad. This editor will develop and edit the journalism that lands on the cover of Sunday Opinion, our flagship print section, weekly.We will depend on this editor for ambitious, memorable pieces that reframe how the country, and the world, debate an issue or think about a problem. You must want to interrogate ideas, political platforms and accepted dogma. And you must have a track record of taking big stories from a spark of an idea through publication, and be a top-notch line editor who can whip long reported features into excellent shape.You will be responsible for producing Sunday Opinion 4 to 8 times a year, as the back-up editor on the section.To do this job well, you must have intellectual range, curiosity, sound judgment, news instincts and creative vision. You will be collaborative, ready to work closely with other editors across the department, and will contribute pieces towards the Sunday Opinion cover.This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. This position reports to the Opinion Editorial Director.**Responsibilities include:**+ Anticipate and set the conversation with assignments to staff and non-staff writers+ Develop ideas journalism off the news and also planned well in advance+ Collaborate with multimedia teams, including design and photo, on how to best tell these stories; collegiality and diplomacy are absolutely essential to this job+ Help cultivate long-form journalism from columnists and a network of regular and contributing writers+ Coordinate with the audience team to maximize the reach and influence of the work+ Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence (ytco.com/company/mission-and-values/) and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world**Basic qualifications:**+ At least 7 years of experience at a digital or daily publication+ At least 5 years of experience editing staff or contributing writers+ Excellent news judgment, with strong line editing skills+ A proven track record of memorable ideas journalism+ An enterprise mindset — open to collaboration and innovation+ A commitment to independent journalism and The Times’s mission and values**Preferred qualifications:**+ Experience working with high-profile journalists and household names+ A facility with shifting beats and editing a wide-range of subject areas from politics to culture, international affairs to sportsThis position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.16 and $125,000.00.**The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve.
