We are seeking a full-time Web Developer to join the team. This position has a salary range of $84,000 to $102,000 per year ($7,000-$8,500 monthly), along with great employment benefits and competitive total compensation incentives.**The Position:**We are looking for a creative, skilled website developer who can bridge the arts of design and software engineering. The incumbent will work with a team of graphic designers, content creators, videographers, and software engineers, and together, the team is charged with recasting the Laboratory’s public website to be as engaging, dynamic, and impactful as the people and research programs of APL-UW.The Web Developer, collaborating with the designers and engineers, will be responsible for the implementation of a new front-end design vision driven by a backend support structure composed of both new and existing components. This incumbent must possess a strong understanding of user experience principles and design. The Web Developer will contribute to a vision of where they successfully accommodate the site’s aesthetic goals without compromising usability. This position will need to stay up-to-date on emerging technologies and will suggest how they can be incorporated to enhance content impact and improve the users’ experience.A successful candidate:• Highly motivated and has a passion for creating and supporting great products• Thrives on collaboration, working side by side with people of all backgrounds and disciplines• Is great at solving problems, debugging, troubleshooting, designing, and implementing solutions to complex technical issuesThe responsibilities of this role will include collaborating with the team to translate design storyboards and wireframes to code and producing visual elements and functionality for the website. Your work will bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation. This position is expected to take an active role on both sides to plan, execute, and assess the website’s aesthetics and functionality.**Web Developer Responsibilities:**As a Web Developer, your responsibilities will include:**Website Development:**• Oversee, manage, and improve websites by developing new user-facing and mobile-based features. Manage and be an active contributor to the entire web development process through the design, development, and deployment phases.• Collaborate with the team’s software engineers to define coding practices, standards, and security protocols.• Write clean, secure, and reusable code and libraries for future use and collaborate with software engineers to improve existing code and its design.• Validate the technical feasibility of website designs, while also applying best practices in designing and testing for accessibility.• Conduct thorough testing of user interfaces in multiple platforms to ensure all designs render correctly and systems function properly.• Troubleshoot and respond to errors and issues as they arise.• Write SQL queries and extract data from UW data warehouses as needed.• Integrate internal and third-party web tools and applications as needed.• Maintain awareness of technology advances and collaborate on applying new approaches.**Project Management:**• Work with the team to prepare detailed project schedules across all phases.• Develop strategies and systems to monitor and track progress, maintain a working schedule and adjust as needed, and contribute to effective decision-making, ensuring that technical details are considered appropriately and decisions facilitate product quality and timely delivery.• Perform schedule analysis including identifying critical paths and proposing mitigation strategies to execute program milestones. Escalate risks, issues, and key decisions; document these items; manage risks and issues as needed.• Actively participate in routine virtual/in-person/hybrid meetings to apprise the project team of progress.**General Requirements:**Bachelor’s degree in information systems, web design, or related field and 2 years of experience as a professional developer• US Citizenship.• Skills in development technologies including HTML, CSS, JSON, and API usage.• Strong understanding of front-end coding and development technologies.• Proficient understanding of client-side scripting such as JavaScript, and JavaScript frameworks.• Familiarity with server-side languages such as Python and PHP.• Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them.• In-depth understanding of the entire web development process (design, development, and deployment).• Knowledge of accessibility issues for users with disabilities, familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices, and experience designing and testing for accessibility.• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting existing web applications and sites.• Excellent analytical and multitasking skills.• Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply new methods and tools.• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision: both independently and as part of a team.• Excellent written/oral communication skills and ability to interact professionally and respectfully with diverse users.• Desire to work in a team-centric environment._Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration._ **About APL:**The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research unit at the University of Washington.
