Job Description

Under general supervision, performs complex and creative art and graphic design functions for major publications and exhibitions for the Chicago Fire Department, and performs related duties as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Conceptualizes thematic designs for print materials (e.g., logos, brochures, mounted displays, banners, web graphics)Designs complex art work using professional computer graphic programs (e.g., Adobe, Illustrator, Photoshop) or traditional art production methodsDiscusses design specifications and creates presentations for client departmentsSelects photographs and illustrations to be used in publicationsMonitors the printing of publications to ensure specification standards are metDesigns and completes art work and text for major exhibitionsCoordinates the preparation of different elements of displays to ensure design specifications and established deadlines are metMeets with clients to obtain final approval of completed art workPerforms routine maintenance and cleaning of related equipment and materialsParticipates in ordering and maintaining graphic arts suppliesMay oversee the work of less experienced graphic artists and provide technical assistance, as requiredParticipates in training staff in the use of basic design and exhibit installation tools, as requiredNOTE: The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive; there may be other duties that are essential to particular positions within the class.

Qualifcations

Minimum QualificationsThree years of commercial art work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PORTFOLIOApplicants selected for an interview must bring a portfolio that conveys strong graphic design principals. The works provided should be limited to professional public information campaigns and/or branding initiatives.

The portfolio may either be a previous professional project, academic portfolio, or freelance work.Each portfolio submitted must have a minimum of two (2) work samples.All images must be original and free from copyright.If an applicant chooses to submit a portfolio containing confidential or privileged information, the applicant must identify the steps taken, (redactions, name changes, or consent from the client or employer) to preserve the confidential or privileged nature of the images.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

Bachelor's degree inGraphic Design, Visual Arts or a directly related fieldProficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud products, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesignA commitment to staying updated on industry trends and continuously improving skills
