This role will report to the Senior Executive Editor. Responsibilities include immediately responding to breaking news, rapidly approving sources, decisively assigning stories, and flawlessly editing and publishing pieces without errors at high speed.Breaking exclusive stories and beating the competition will always be a top priority.The ideal candidate is a strong editor with a deep knowledge of national security, law enforcement, and legal affairs. The editor will primarily work on written stories but should also prioritize working across platforms within the NBC News group like nbcnews.com, Nightly News, News NOW and MSNBC. Experience in television, investigative and data journalism is a plus.ResponsibilitiesManage a team of correspondents, reporters, producers and associate producers covering national security, law enforcement and legal affairsDisplay at all times exceptionally strong news judgment, uncompromising journalistic ethics, calm under pressure, and attention to detailMaintain a deep and timely understanding of current events and ongoing coverage across NBC News platforms and competitorsDevelop robust, collaborative and working relationships with digital, television teams and editorial leaders across NBCUniversal News Group platforms

QualificationsBasic Qualifications:A proven track record of successfully assigning and editing original, high-impact, award-winning national security, law enforcement and legal affairs coverage10+ years of editing and reporting experience at a major news organization, with a preference for editing national security, law enforcement, and legal affairs reportingExtraordinary editing skills — an ability to edit everything from a 4,000-word investigation to a 250-word fast-turnImpeccable news judgment when it comes to covering breaking stories to assigning in-depth, long-term storiesAble and willing to work flexible hours, including breaking news on weekendsBachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experienceWilling to be based in 30 Rockefeller Center in New York or NBC News’s Washington, D.C. bureau and must work in the office 3-5 days per week.

Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
