Brief Description of Duties:The Assistant Vice President for Communications, reporting to the Associate Vice President and Deputy for Marketing and Communications, oversees, develops and leads a comprehensive strategic communications program to advance the image of Stony Brook University (SBU) at the national, state and local levels, including managing the teams that support media relations, crisis communications, issues management, executive communications and internal communications. The Assistant VP is responsible for maintaining comprehensive knowledge of diverse issues and requires continuous coordination across Stony Brook in order to maintain an advanced level of situational awareness and information. The incumbent evaluates and proposes opportunities and develops important campus communication strategies and policies that advance institutional priorities. In crisis situations, the Assistant VP leads a communications response team, including establishing processes and policies for crisis communications, and is a conduit for accurate and timely information to the media and public while protecting the interests of the University. For executive communications, the Assistant VP and team evaluate or propose opportunities, develop briefing materials and/or remarks, and prepare SBU's president and senior leadership for successful public or media appearances. The Assistant VP must be able to work comfortably and confidentially with top administrators in all areas of the University and be available to respond to critical requests for information in short timeframes. All of the activities require the ability to build trusting relationships with University leaders, to understand the appropriate tone and language needed when shaping opportunities or responding to requests, and the strategic thinking necessary to align communications with institutional priorities. Excellent judgment regarding communication of the University's position, as well as accuracy and care in the dissemination of information will be critical in building trust, support and goodwill among stakeholders. In this role, the Assistant VP is expected to lead, mentor and develop team members. The successful incumbent must work independently, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment as well as respond quickly and professionally under pressure. Excellent written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills, are key.For Communications, the Assistant VP will act on half of the Associate VP of Marketing and Communications/of Deputy in strategic leadership and guidance at the executive level in critical areas of these positions' portfolio in their absence. This includes assisting the Deputy by chairing or participating in meetings. Direct, plan and implement strategic and tactical communication initiatives under their purview, focusing on effectiveness, efficiency and service quality. Serve as a point of escalation for key issues, leading overall strategic planning to achieve business goals by prioritizing initiatives. The Assistant Vice President serves as a key member to the Marketing and Communications senior leadership team.

Duties:

Determine, formulate and administer management policies and practices for providing critical University-wide communications. Serve on essential University-wide communication committees. Once policies are implemented, continue to evaluate annually and as needed. On behalf of the Associate VP and Deputy, the overall strategic planning for their portfolio is overseen. Oversight of executive-level projects. Oversee departmental change; provide leadership and strategic direction to the various functional teams to improve processes. Communicate vision within the incumbent's portfolio, monitor goals and the execution of strategies to achieve these goals. Provide strategic planning and development of annual goals and objectives.The incumbent will have primary responsibility to oversee, manage and systemize issues and management activities for Stony Brook University. This includes prioritizing daily for a team of communicators and media relations specialists, being the primary point of contact with the University senior leadership, as well as SUNY and NY-state leadership. Responsible for overseeing the development of briefing materials, and communications documents to include background information and statements on issues aligned with SBU strategic priorities, as well as items of specific interest to the SBU President and senior leadership. Responsible for continually identifying emerging trends & changes in the environment and recommending appropriate responses, including writing communications plans, statements and messages, particularly when trends or changes could impact the institution. Problem solve and actively partner with University senior leadership, University experts and other communications and marketing team members. The incumbent evaluates, proposes opportunities and develops important campus media strategies and develops key University policies.Oversee the development, execution and management of institutional crisis response. Oversee the ongoing maintenance of crisis communications policy and protocols. Ensure accurate and timely response strategy, including communication plans, statements and messages while ensuring SBU's interests are well represented. Serve as a point of escalation for problem solving University senior leadership, experts, and the response team leading up to and during a crisis are actively collaborating. Ensure that there are strategies in place to anticipate and mitigate adverse or potentially negative issues that may impact the University's reputation.Oversight of social media content. This includes the development of Stony Brook University's and the University President's primary social media accounts. Ensure that the team is establishing relationships, and growing audiences and presence. Oversee strategies to prevent, mitigate and manage crisis via social media.Research, evaluate and propose positioning opportunities for Stony Brook University's president and executive leaders, develop in-depth briefing materials and prepare leaders for successful public engagement.Establish staff priorities, goals and accountabilities and measure relative to performance and mentor a diverse team of communicators and content developers responsible for SBU and SBM media relations, issues management, crisis management, executive and internal communications. Team members must continually collaborate with others on the Marketing and Communications teams, as well as SBU and SBM senior leadership, faculty and researchers.Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
