. As Production Editor, you’ll work with a small team and a dynamic and amazing group of independent authors to manage the editorial and production schedules of several titles per year. You have a passion for books and a mastery of the written English language.This is ideally a hybrid remote and in-office position based in Asheville, but for the right candidate, we’ll consider fully remote work as long as you’re based in the United States and have a willingness to travel. Ideally, you’ll work from our downtown Asheville office at least three days a week with some flexibility in your work schedule. This is not an entry level position. Your application will not be considered if you don’t meet this requirement. (Experienced editorial assistants are encouraged to apply.)A bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or similar field OR equivalent experience.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.Proficiency with Microsoft systems, the Google suite, Adobe Acrobat, file management, and the ability to learn new technologies.Excellent industry knowledge of the editorial and book production process.Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.A publishing nerd’s enthusiasm for the Oxford comma and the singular use of “they” (if you don’t know what either of these mean, this is probably not the job for you).Experience with project management software such as Slack and Proofhub.Excellent email etiquette and the ability to build rapport with our authors. Otterpine prides itself on the relationships we build with our authors.Experience with Amazon KDP, Seller Central, Advantage, and/or Amazon Ads is a plus.Experience with Ingram Spark, Draft2Digital, and other indie publishing platforms is a plus.A love of reading!Self-drive, a deep sense of curiosity, and eagerness to learn new things.Exceptional writing and editing skills.Love for organization, building efficient systems, and meeting deadlines, while also possessing the ability to to pivot and go with the flow when necessary.Strong interpersonal skills and empathy for others.Production Editor ResponsibilitiesManage the editorial and production schedules of several projects simultaneously.Hire and oversee freelance developmental editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders for each project you manage. HUGE PLUS if you have professional experience in any of these editorial areas, as we favor doing work in-house whenever possible.Prepare final manuscript for layout.Collaborate with designers and illustrators to manage layout, cover design, and art direction.Review and approve work of freelancers.Write back cover copy, web copy, and other promotional copy.Act as liaison between the author, editors, and designers, ensuring all queries are resolved and all author’s needs are met.Work closely with authors to help them realize their vision, while also being able to gently push back when their preferences conflict with our professional recommendations.Keep the books on schedule and ensure they are free of errors.Manage ISBN and copyright registration.Potential to bridge into marketing and PR work as well.Pay, Schedule, and BenefitsFull-time (35 to 40 hours per week)Pay: Hourly or salaried based on background and experienceAfter one month: 10 days of paid time off per year.After three months: 11 flex holidays per year, healthcare stipend and direct primary care membership, indie bookstore stipend, opportunities for training and growth.After 12 months: 401(k) plan with up to 3.5% company matchOtterpine is a small and growing company committed to building a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package that considers our employees’ physical and emotional health, retirement and savings, and overall well-being.Otterpine is
