This position works as a member of the publications team and is responsible for designing the quarterly magazine Montana The Magazine of Western History and Montana Historical Society Press books.The ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic team member who loves graphic design, has a knowledge of current trends and software used in graphic design, an interest in Montana history, excellent communication skills, and works well under deadlines.Come join us at the MTHS where we work together to share Montana’s stories and inspire exploration!Function :The Publications Program is one of six programs within the Montana Historical Society. Under the direction of the Publications Program manager, who also functions as the executive editor, the graphic designer must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Among other tasks, the ability to be detail orientated, have great time management skills, and a welcoming and friendly attitude, are all a must.Representative Duties:Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, including authors, project teams agency wide, and serves as the Publication Program’s expert for design.Responsible for administration and oversight of multiple projects that include four issues annually of a magazine, book projects, reprints of books, advertisement design, and brochures.Revises design elements to meet evolving needs of the program and the Montana Historical Society.Assists with researching new software or design concepts.Reviews and completes proof of designs for team to obtain approval before publishing, presenting, and finalizing.Required Skills:Ability to communicate clearly with project teams, authors, external vendors, and other stakeholders.Proficient at creating designs, concepts, and layouts, including selection of colors, images, photos, illustrations, typography, and interfaces.Talented in developing graphics and layouts for items such as illustrations, agency logos, identity, and Web sites.Adept in presenting concepts to clients and team members and incorporate changes recommended into final designs.Skilled in developing, designing, reviewing, and creating new applications ideas, and productions including artistic contributions.Skilled in use of industry software to generate, edit, draw, and print illustrations, text, images, and artwork.Experienced in review and proof of designs before final approval for publishing.Qualifications:A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field and at least two years of experience in basic art and graphic design is required.
