University Libraries, Immersive Spaces & TechnologiesExempt, MR08POSITION SUMMARYThe Makerspace Manager at the University of Tennessee Libraries is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive management of the Medbery Makerspace, ensuring its effective operation across multiple shifts and weekends. Reporting to the Head of Immersive Spaces & Technologies, this role involves maintaining the functionality and safety of the Makerspace, including managing equipment and resources. The Manager will hire, train, and supervise a team of student assistants, and coordinate the makerspace work of library staff, and faculty from multiple departments, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and procedural documentation. They are tasked with developing and implementing training materials and safety requirements to maintain a safe and well-functioning workspace for all users. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, the Manager plays a crucial role in the development and assessment of Makerspace services. This includes creating and executing the Medbery Makerspace certificate and stackable credentialing program, managing budgets for equipment, supplies, and student employees, and working with the library assessment team to track and report on Makerspace engagement and usage. The Manager will engage in strategic planning to align Makerspace resources with curricular efforts across the university, continuously updating training materials and instructional modules as services evolve to meet user needs and institutional goals.The Manager is responsible for fostering a collaborative and welcoming environment within the Makerspace. This includes developing and leading workshops, supporting workshop leaders, collaborating with faculty to integrate Makerspace activities into coursework, collaborating with Libraries Community Engagement coordinator to plan community engagement events, and recruiting groups and classes to enhance the Makerspace’s visibility and usage. Proactively working with other campus makerspaces, the Manager will develop shared credentials and procedures to improve the overall student experience across services. They will oversee quality assurance for equipment and practices to ensure a positive user experience. In summary, the Manager plays a central role in the overall services and programming related to the Medbery Makerspace. They must have a combination of communication and technical skills and be ready to shift in a moment’s notice from providing technical support to a user to consulting on project development, to responding to an engagement request. It will be a dynamic, fast-paced position responsible for running the operations of a new and evolving service.

QualificationsRESPONSIBILITIESMakerspace Management and Operations:

Work with a high level of autonomy to manage, ensure staffing, and maintain the Medbery Makerspace across multiple shifts and weekends.Direct the work of a makerspace team of staff and faculty from throughout the Libraries through training, supervising work in the makerspaces, and providing guidance to those working in the makerspace.Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate the work of student library assistants who work in the makerspace. Collaborate with the Studio Manager on cross-training efforts and training programs.Ensure operations are running through evening and weekend hours, providing training and support to employees working these shifts.Prepare makerspace supplies, equipment, and staffing annual budget proposals.

Manages the makerspace materials and staffing budget in operations including creating and maintaining the staffing schedule of student and staff employees, overseeing supply materials charges, and developing cost structures for consumable supplies.Develop the makerspace equipment budget, reviewing and recommending equipment models and prioritizing equipment purchasing based on service goals and user needs.

Develop technical requirements and curriculum for individual pieces of technology as part of the Medbery Makerspace certificate and stackable credentialing program. Coordinate staff to provide technology certification trainings including training staff to provide consistent training, scheduling workshops, and responding to workshop requests from courses and groups.Ensure that makerspace equipment is operational and safety standards are met, coordinating with Libraries IT staff as needed to ensure consistent functionality.Develop training materials and safety requirements for equipment usage.

Develop safety and procedural policies for use of the makerspace.Train makerspace team of staff and student employees to ensure safety protocols are followed consistently.

Consult with faculty, researchers, and students on projects using specialized equipment and techniques.

Provide expertise knowledge, equipment or tool recommendations, hands-on support, and guidance to users.Assist with project planning and development.Consult with faculty developing maker related course assignments.

Update training materials, tracking systems, and instructional modules as services evolve.Manage makerspace data including usage and certifications. Work with the library assessment team to ensure data captured is shared and meets reporting needs.Participate in strategic planning for the makerspace to ensure our resources are tied to curricular efforts across campus. Develop short term and long term plans for services and equipment.

Makerspace Engagement:

Collaborate with the Studio and Public Services to foster a collaborative, welcoming environment for users across library spaces and to engage library colleagues in the makerspace.Lead in the development of the Medbery Makerspace certificate and stackable credentialing program including developing digital badge requirements, promoting the program, and potentially collaborating with campus units developing digital badge programs in Canvas.Lead strategic planning and assessment efforts to enhance user experience and engagement in the Makerspace.Oversee quality assurance for equipment and practices to ensure positive user experience.Collaborate proactively with other makerspaces on campus, identifying opportunities for developing shared credentials and procedures, with the goal to improve the experience of students working across makerspaces.Collaborate proactively with other makerspaces on campus, identifying opportunities for developing shared credentials and procedures, with the goal to improve the experience of students working across makerspaces.Coordinate events, programming and instruction in the Makerspace.

Develop and lead engagement activities with classes and groups.Collaborate with faculty to create makerspace activities that tie to class content.Coordinate workshops in the makerspace.Provide support to workshop leaders.Actively recruit groups and classes to the makerspace to expand reach within the university community.

Professional Development, Outreach, and Education:

Serve on departmental, interdepartmental, and campus planning and work groups that address problems, concerns, new developments, and implement new policies and initiatives.Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Immersive Spaces & Technologies.Participate in professional development activities to develop maker literacies.Complete 1-3 hours of professional development each month.

QUALIFICATIONSRequired

Bachelor’s Degree3+ years of experience using maker technologies in a makerspace, fabrication shop, or similar environment.Demonstrated record of progressive responsibility in a service environment.Experience with crafting, 3D printing, design, and/or intermediate electronics (circuit boards, Arduinos/Raspberry Pi, IoT devices, etc.)

Master’s DegreeLibrary experienceExperience in higher education settings.Experience working with educators to design, deliver, and assess experiential learning activities.Experience performing outreach activities to promote a program or service

Knowledge and skills in information based technology related to research and student learning.Knowledge of Library integrated systems.
