Side-by-Side Assistant Artistic Director

Status: Part-time, non-exempt (8-10 hours/week)

Reports to: Assistant Director of Teacher Education

Dates of Engagement: September 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025

Overview

The Side-by-Side Assistant Artistic Director will work with the Side-by-Side Artistic Director, Assistant Director of Teacher Education, and Side-by-Side Program Manager in developing and executing the overarching vision of Longy’s Side-by-Side Program. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the artistic and educational development of young musicians within Longy’s Side-by-Side programming. This person clearly demonstrates Longy’s commitment to welcoming and belonging in how they engage within the Longy community and with K-12 students, their families, alumni, donors, guests, and partners. This individual is a self-starter, problem-solver, and well-organized manager of the operations needed to run a successful youth program.

Responsibilities

Assist the Side-by-Side Artistic Director in designing and executing rehearsal plans for all Side-by-Side rehearsals throughout the year.Be present at all rehearsals and concerts and communicate with Artistic Director and Assistant Director of Teacher Education about scheduling conflicts ahead of time.Assist the Side-by-Side Artistic Director teaching sectionals and full-ensemble rehearsals as needed.Assume full artistic responsibilities in the event of the Artistic Director’s absence.Guide and mentor Longy Teaching Assistants and Master of Music Education students in their development as music educators at Side-by-Side.Collaborate with the Side-by-Side Program Manager to ensure coordination of logistics and facilities needs for rehearsals and concerts, both on campus and at outside organizations.With Side-by-Side Program Manager, ensure that the Side-by-Side website is updated with current and accurate information.Participate in weekly check-ins with the Artistic Director and Assistant Director of Teacher Education.Actively communicate with Side-by-Side Artistic Director and Assistant Director of Teacher Education on community suggestions, questions, and concerns, to ensure team alignment and transparency.Other duties as assigned.Qualities & Qualifications

Experience working with instrumental ensembles (both strings and winds/percussion), experience working with K-12 students preferred.Understanding of music student experience, from beginning musicianship to advanced education, and post-graduate pathways.Excellent communicator who is flexible in their approach to working with students and adults, including writing skills to support both daily communication as well as periodic reports and evaluations.Warm, welcoming demeanor and ability to quickly build rapport and inspire confidence with students, families, faculty, and staff.Seamlessly manage multiple projects at a time and respond to changing priorities.Exceptional administrative and organizational skills.Spanish speaking preferred.Sense of humor is a must.
