Job TitleDirector of Public Relations

Summary

The Director of Public Relations is responsible for the planning and execution of comprehensive media relations and internal communications that enhance John Carroll University's visibility, reputation, relationships, and resources and elevate John Carroll's thought leaders' visibility in local, national, and educational media.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Director of Public Relations proactively identifies and develops communications plans and news opportunities and works on special projects that enhance the University's public profile. This role assists with managing emergency and crisis communications.

The Director of Public Relations is a collaborative and experienced news and communications professional with demonstrated success in assessing, developing, and executing communications strategies and must understand how PR can support marketing as it pertains to John Carroll University National Strategy.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop a comprehensive and creative news and PR plan to support the University's strategic communications, marketing, and brand awareness goals. Direct the media relations program, including developing strategies and procedures that focus on building visibility in local, regional, and national print, online, and broadcast media.Create internal communications that support stakeholders on campusDevelop successful relationships with faculty, students, and others on campus to source story ideas for internal and external audiences and create effective pitches that result in media coverage, op-eds, and other media appearances by John Carroll University experts.Implement a speakers bureau among the faculty.Build a strong, proactive and comprehensive internal and media relations program that aggressively and appropriately brings the story of John Carroll University and its faculty and students to both traditional and non-traditional media at all levels, notably including national media in line with core, expansion and growth enrollment markets.Create a system for sharing information, including news releases, photographs, and other messages of importance to the University community, on the University's website and through other electronic communications.Manage the University's online newsroom.Create a system for sharing news with divisions across campus, including University Advancement.Assist with media communication efforts during crisis events and in response to sensitive issues by maintaining working relationships with the news media via personal contact, news releases, media advisories, story ideas, campus events, and news conferences. Serve as a member of the Weather Emergency Team (WET) and the campus Emergency Management Team (EMT).Write and edit news releases, web stories and other related campus communications covering breaking news, campus events and announcements, and other media opportunities.Coordinate multimedia projects to support news and media relations, such as videos that may accompany web stories.Monitor national media and education trends, especially those with implications for John Carroll University. Provide briefing materials and other background information to the president and senior staff for meetings with media and special projects.Track, measure and analyze media interaction to inform strategy.Assist with writing, editing and proofreading, as assigned, and other materials for a variety of internal and external University publications, including admissions and advancement materials, the University magazine, employee communications and publicity materials for special events.Other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications or a related fieldFive or more years of experience in communications, proven success in PRDemonstrated knowledge of media organizations and media relations strategies and success placing stories in national media on behalf of a complex organizationStrong work ethic and unwavering commitment to collegiality, confidentiality, accuracy, and honestyGreat attention to detail, highly organized and the proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneouslyDemonstrated interpersonal skills working well with diverse colleaguesSuperb written and oral communication skills; sound management and presentation skills; the ability to think creatively and analytically and to synthesize ideas quickly under deadlines; and the sensitivity, diplomacy and flexibility to balance diverse communications goals and needsKnowledge of issues and trends in higher education, particularly those that pertain to Jesuit Catholic higher educationStrong understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and creating an inclusive campus environmentInterest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the worldPreferred Qualifications

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary range is $52,000 - $65,000, commensurate with qualifications. This position offers a generous Total Rewards package that includes health and dental insurance options, paid vacation, personal, sick, and mission time, holidays, 403 (b) retirement plan, life insurance, and tuition remission benefits for you, your spouse, and children.
