General purpose:

The MICA Support Technician, Graphic Design is responsible for coordinating andsupporting the functioning of technical equipment used by all MICA Graphic Design departments. TheSupport Technician provides technical expertise to students and faculty through curricular engagement and co-curricular initiatives, ensuring the highest level of graphic design production and research.

*This is a full-time AY, 10-month position (August - May).

Summary of Essential Functions:Demonstrate expertise in technology and resources related to Graphic Design, and work with faculty and students within the area to help advance their practice.Create and deliver instructional documentation and presentations in support of curricular and co-curricular outcomes for faculty and students.Collaborate with the Technology staff in the support and maintenance of Graphic Design equipment.Management of teaching and learning spaces with printing, digital fabrication, 2D prototyping, and photographic equipment includes ensuring that equipment functions effectively and safely, the facilities are clean and efficient, and supplies are stocked and available.Partnership with the Operations department is also expected.Monitor operating budgets and assist in research and purchasing for capital acquisitions in partnership with Technology and Academic Operations.Train, schedule, and manage student workers.Track/reconcile specific budgets in coordination with the Chair and Directors. Make necessary purchases of equipment, tools, and materials to ensure the departments are fully equipped.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:Maintain the daily operations of Graphic Design, which includes coordinating maintenance and organization of the physical space including computer labs, production studios, and student workspaces. This is done in collaboration with the Technology department through the ticketing system and collaboration with Technology Services staff.Supervise, recruit, and train student workers; assign, review and evaluate their work.Hire/terminate student workers with assistance with the HR office. Approve/Sign and submit pay forms for student workers.Ensure the highest level of functionality and safety of all equipment and learning tools for students and faculty.Make or coordinate repairs as necessary.Develop instructions and guides (and subsequent updates) on use of Graphic Design equipment, including the photographic equipment, prototyping tools, binding equipment and vinyl cutting, large format printer, Risograph printer, AR/VR resources, 3D printer and digital fabrication tools.Conduct demos for students. Develop and conduct workshops on relevant Graphic Design processes for undergraduate students that relate to curricular goals.Manage the end-of-semester turnover of the studio to ensure successful start-up of the following semester.Ensure that all computers in the lab effectively support the needs of the studio and classes therein.Communicate the need for software updates as they are identified. Test configurations and provide feedback.Research and advise on new software opportunities related to Graphic Design learning. Coordinate their purchase and installationDeploy new hardware for use in Graphic Design classrooms in cooperation with the Technology department.Maintain checkout equipment inventory for Graphic Design students and faculty.Communicate and facilitate the replacement of broken equipment and equipment upgrades.Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:BFA or a four-year degreeBackground in graphic design or related field.Experience working with cameras, printers and other digital production tools for artists and designers, or ability and desire to learn

Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Graphic Design or related fieldTeaching experienceExperience operating and maintaining photography and 2D prototyping equipment and printersPersonal commitment or interests that will contribute to equity in the institution and in art education more broadlyA personal practice in graphic design or a related fieldExperience with editing software such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesignExperience with online blogging or content management systems such as WordPressStrong visual design skills
