The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a full-time, 10-month renewable (July 15-May 15 annually), Technical Director position. The candidate will join an energetic 25+ person theatre and dance faculty and staff, with a load equivalent to 40 hours per week in the areas of technical direction, stagecraft, scene painting, technical drawing, properties construction, electrics, and other related areas of production. The candidate will serve as the conservatory’s technical director for 5-6 mainstage productions each academic year, and mentor students on signature series and workshop productions, with the possibility of teaching each fall and spring semester.

Primary ResponsibilitiesEach year, starting July 15th and continuing through May 15th:Provide technical direction and participate in the operations of the scene shop including organization, planning, preparation of construction documents, engineering, purchasing, and similar tasks necessary for pre-production of all conservatory productions;Create and maintain daily/weekly/monthly operation schedules and production calendars for all conservatory productions;Assign and monitor student crew assignments, as required in Rehearsal & Production classes;Actively participate in scenic and property construction, rigging, electrics, and painting in the day-to-day pre-production/construction phase of all conservatory productions, whether students are present or not, while overseeing quality control and safety;Supervise, instruct, and mentor all student assistants, student workers, and volunteers for scenic and property construction, electrics, and painting in the pre-production/construction phase of all conservatory productions;Oversee safety in all areas of the scenic, properties, electrics, and sound shops;Attend and supervise all technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and strikes of annual conservatory productions;Perform routine maintenance on equipment and systems, as well as inventory;Possibility of teaching 1-3 courses annually in area of emphasis.Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in technical theatre, design, or related area. Master of Fine Arts degree in technical theatre, design, or related area, is a plus. (Degree must be from regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)Minimum of three (3) years’ work experience as a professional technical director in a professional and/or higher educational setting;Demonstrated record of success working with and instructing apprentices, interns, or students of all levels;Demonstrated experience in stage electrics;Demonstrated woodworking skills as they pertain to theatrical construction;Demonstrated metalworking skills as they pertain to theatrical construction;Demonstrated experience with stage rigging;Demonstrated experience with scene painting;Demonstrated experience in accurately interpreting designer & technical drawings for theatre;Extensive proven experience with CAD for producing technical and construction drawings for theatre;Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a safe working environment;Demonstrated ability to create and adhere to production budgets and deadlines, without compromising designs;Demonstrated commitment to work on the floor alongside professional staff (e.g., Scene Shop Supervisor), whether students are present or not;Evidence of excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community.Application Deadline
