We are looking for an experienced Librarian Assistant Temp for our Detroit Office. In addition to Detroit, we have offices in Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Washington D.C. and Chicago, IL. With more than 350 attorneys working in 60 different areas of concentration, Honigman provides timely and cost-effective counsel to clients in numerous industries.


The Library Assistant supports the firm’s research and intelligence efforts by fulfilling ready reference requests, such as retrieving cases, dockets, news, company reports, and other specific information essential for attorneys and staff. This role requires independent problem-solving skills, the capacity to learn and adapt to new technologies, and the ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, legal assistants, and staff. Working under the guidance of the Director of Research and Intelligence, the Library Assistant ensures quick access to requested information.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Independent Work & Prioritization: Efficiently prioritize and manage tasks to meet deadlines, communicating with supervisors regarding workload balance.

Ready Reference Requests:

  • Provide exemplary service by efficiently retrieving cases, court dockets, news articles, company reports, and other specific information as requested by attorneys.
  • Use legal research databases and other tools to retrieve documents and provide accurate, timely information, demonstrating proficiency with technology and commitment to client service.
  • Refer complex research inquiries to Librarians when additional expertise is required, maintaining ethical principles and knowledge of resources.

Conflict of Interest (COI) Checks:

  • Conduct preliminary COI checks to assist in identifying potential conflicts in new client matters.
  • Collaborate with the compliance team as needed to ensure accuracy and adherence to firm policies regarding COI.

Technology & Research Tools:

  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and use new research technologies that improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist in training attorneys and staff on emerging research tools and methodologies as needed.
  • Collaborate with the team to identify opportunities for integrating new solutions into research workflows, supporting career and firm advancement.

Invoice Processing & Financial Management:

  • Process and organize invoices from research databases and other vendor-provided materials.
  • Reconcile credit card statements and ensure accurate allocation of costs across the firm’s accounts, displaying accuracy and attention to detail in financial procedures.

Vendor & Resource Management:

  • Manage subscriptions, renewals, and returns with vendors to ensure accurate records and timely availability of resources.
  • Coordinate with vendors on subscription issues and cancellations as necessary, demonstrating responsibility in resource management.

Monitoring Legal Developments:

  • Track relevant updates and trends in the legal field that may impact ongoing cases or the firm’s practice areas.
  • Disseminate important updates to relevant practice groups as needed, demonstrating an understanding of diverse user needs and a commitment to continuous learning.

Departmental Support & Material Organization:

  • Process and route mail and circulation materials.
  • Create electronic versions of key documents and route materials to appropriate team members.
  • Maintain organization and inventory of the department’s physical and digital collections.


  • MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis) for document and company report retrieval.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and research tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to accurately deliver requested information, demonstrating a high standard of client service.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently.
  • Commitment to high standards of client service and confidentiality.
  • Prior experience in a legal or research-focused environment is preferred.
