Position Summary:

The Marketing & Communications Manager leads the strategy, implementation, and evaluation of IAAM’s communications strategy inclusive of e-communications and printed collateral. They are IAAM’s lead author of marketing content, overseeing the voice, brand, and editorial strategy that engages and informs current and future visitors, patrons, and participants.

These communications drive strategic awareness, interest, and engagement in the museum’s mission, programs, and significance locally, nationally, and internationally. The opportunity is ideal for an entrepreneurial and collaborative marketing manager excited by the prospect of engaging a national and international following for this new, significant institution.

The Manager reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and collaborates with other marketing managers who manage Media & Public Relations, Web & Social Media, and Community Relations.

Duties/Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the organization’s communications strategy, authoring all messaging including institutional web copy, email newsletters, email marketing for priority programs and initiatives, and print collateral.

  • Develop an annual communications plan that drives local, national, and international awareness of, and engagement with, the museum.

  • Develop targeted communications plans for each major exhibition, program series, and special offering that produces a data-driven effort to attract and engage new audiences and participants.

  • Oversee tracking methods to measure the ROI of annual communications efforts and each campaign. Ensure accurate data capture and analysis.

  • Serve as the lead editor and production coordinator for all printed marketing collateral and email marketing content. Collaborate with video production and other IAAM content producers in the Marketing & Learning & Engagement Department for opportunities to feature video/ multi-media content in communications.

  • Source and manage printing vendors for printed collateral.

  • In collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Managers, and Learning & Engagement department, develop an annual institutional marketing calendar that supports a regular, enthusiastic effort to heighten organizational visibility through the museum’s major programs and auxiliary activities that provide access to the people, places, objects, and experiences behind them. Incorporate the institutional marketing calendar priorities into communications plans.

  • Help shape the public perception of the museum by developing strategies and messaging that spread the museum’s mission to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at one of our country’s most sacred sites. In collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Managers, and Learning & Engagement department, develop messaging that communicates the museum’s distinctive exhibitions, permanent collection, programs, expertise, significance and impact to targeted audience segments.

  • Support the Marketing department at all major museum events as determined by the Chief Marketing Officer.

  • Coordinate with outside department consultants on communications and advertising efforts as requested by the Chief Marketing Officer.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • 3+ years of relevant marketing and communications required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage an organization’s brand, voice, and editorial strategy
  • Graphic design experience preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, high-energy environment
  • Ability to develop standardized processes and workflows
  • Understanding of traditional and emerging marketing channels and tools
  • Ability to think creatively, innovatively, and analytically
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to successfully collaborate in a matrixed, cross functional team to accomplish organizational goals
