Job Description
Position Summary:
The Media & Public Relations Manager coordinates and facilitates the strategy, implementation, and evaluation of the International African American Museum’s marketing and communications plan; builds relationships with local stakeholders, including the city of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (Explore Charleston), the Chamber of Commerce, community and social organizations, the faith-based community and others who share IAAM’s mission; builds a database of journalists, bloggers and influencers and communicates with them regularly on IAAM events and stories.
The Media & Public Relations Manager reports to the Chief Marketing Officer and collaborates with other marketing managers who manage Public Relations and Web & Social Media and cross-departmentally with Learning & Education department leads: Faith, Programming and Community Relations.
Duties/Responsibilities:- Create and execute community engagement plans for special exhibitions, program series and events via in-person events, online posts and social media.
- Work with IAAM leadership to create and implement initiatives to improve the public’s perception of the museum.
- Develop and disseminate strategic messaging on the museum’s mission and impact.
- Write and distribute stories that meet IAAM’s mission to highlight the African American journey in the U.S.
- Create an annual plan and editorial calendar to share with local, national, and international groups interested in the work of the museum.
- Develop and implement a regular speakers’ series (both internal and external) based on museum exhibits.
- Coordinate with IAAM’s volunteer team to execute community outreach and events.
- Partner with the CVB for press and event planner fam trips to boost the museum’s visibility across the U.S.
- Spotlight the museum as a venue for local events, conventions and meetings.
- In collaboration with the Convention & Visitors Bureau (Explore Charleston), Marketing Managers, and Learning & Engagement department, develop an annual institutional marketing calendar that supports a regular, enthusiastic effort to heighten organizational visibility through the museum’s major programs and auxiliary activities that provide access to the people, places, objects, and experiences behind them. Incorporate the institutional marketing calendar priorities into communications plans.
- Develop an annual communications plan that drives local, national, and international awareness of, and engagement with, the museum.
- Help shape the public perception of the museum by developing strategies and messaging that spread the museum’s mission to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at one of our country’s most sacred sites. In collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer, and Media & Public Relations Manager, Social & Digital Coordinator, and Learning & Engagement department, develop messaging that communicates the museum’s distinctive exhibitions, permanent collection, programs, expertise, significance and impact to targeted audience segments.
- Support the Marketing department at all major museum events as determined by the Chief Marketing Officer.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in related field or equivalent
- 3+ years of relevant marketing and communications required
- Commitment to excellence and high standards
- Demonstrated ability to manage an organization’s brand, voice, and editorial strategy
- Graphic design experience preferred
- Ability to work in a fast paced, high-energy environment
- Ability to develop standardized processes and workflows
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
- Understanding of traditional and emerging marketing channels and tools
- Ability to think creatively, innovatively, and analytically
