Internship Summary


The Public Relations Intern will assist the Public Information Officer in developing and executing public relations strategies to enhance the visibility of health department programs, services, and events. This internship offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of public relations within a government setting, including media relations, content creation, community outreach, and strategic communication. As a Public Relations Intern, you will contribute to creating positive public perceptions of the Bear River Health Department and public health in general, while also gaining exposure to challenges and opportunities unique to government communications.


This internship is typically scheduled for around 10-15 hours per week for 4 months. 


Responsibilities & Learning Objectives


Content Creation and Social Media:

  • Assist in creating engaging content (images, videos, graphics, copy) for social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and others.
  • Collaborate with the communications team and Public Information Officer to align social media content with health department programs and events.
  • Research current design trends and suggest new ideas to improve content reach and engagement.
  • Support community engagement by creating graphics that communicate health tips, public health campaigns, and educational materials. 
  • Help develop content calendars to ensure timely and consistent posting across social media channels.


Media Relations:

  • Assist in drafting press releases, media advisories, and other communication materials.
  • Monitor local, regional, and national news coverage related to public health issues and track media mentions.
  • Support the development and maintenance of media contact lists.


General Administrative Support

  • Provide administrative support for the Public Information Officer, including scheduling meetings, coordinating logistics for events, and maintaining communications files.
  • Assist in compiling and maintaining a digital archive of communication materials and media releases.


Qualifications/Requirements


  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in Public Health, Community Health Education, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
  • Must have knowledge in computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, internet and email use.
  • Must have good written, verbal, and public communication skills.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work well in team situations, meet deadlines, and be able to work independently on a day-to-day basis.
  • Preference given to those with experience working with G-Suite, social media platforms and other PR concepts and strategies.
