The Office of Communications shines a spotlight on the people and programs of Wesleyan University to enhance its reputation as a leader in liberal arts education. In so doing, it serves as a partner with units across campus, providing expertise in brand management, strategic communication, media relations, digital and social media strategy, website development, content training and strategy, print and online publications and videography and photography.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Associate Communications Writer is a member of the Strategic Communications team within the Office of Communications and is responsible for writing and editing a variety of content to support various University initiatives. From undergraduate recruitment materials to feature stories in Wesleyan Magazine, the Associate Communications Writer will handle a broad range of projects while adhering to all relevant style guides.

The Associate Communications Writer is responsible for capturing Wesleyan's brand and tone in all materials, providing compelling content in a variety of channels, and ensuring that all content is tailored to the specific audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Write, edit, and proof short and long-form pieces for a variety of publications including email campaigns and print publications.
  • Mine stories and handle written assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • Participate in collaborative cross-functional project teams, providing input and editorial help as assigned.
  • Serve as main in-house proofreader and copy editor on Comms-produced pieces.
  • Assist with tracking alumni book submissions and writing book reviews.
  • Monitor and approve More Campus and Community Calendar requests.
  • Track and maintain Master Facts & Figures list in conjunction with Managing Editor.
  • Other projects as assigned.
This position is required to work on campus.

(Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or similar discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Three years of demonstrated experience in consistent professional writing.
  • Proven writing, editing, and proofreading ability with strong proficiency in English.
  • Superior editing and grammar skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment where very simple projects run side-by-side with highly complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in a variety of styles, including promotional and journalistic (writing samples of professional published work required).
  • Ability to present complex facts in an engaging style and tone that is easily understood by a broad readership.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, collaborative team player able to develop strong working relationships both within the team and across campus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to work with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with AP or Chicago Style. (or comprehensive in-house style guide)
