Purpose

The University of Texas at Austin and the Clements Center for National Security seek an executive editor to help the lead the Texas National Security Review (TNSR) one of the country's premier journals on national and international security.

TNSR is a print and online journal, launched in 2017. Its mission is to publish accessible, rigorous, peer-reviewed scholarship relevant to international and national security policy. The journal incorporates a broad range of disciplinary perspectives in its scholarly articles and publishes strategy articles from leading policy professionals. TNSR strives to offer a prominent and widely regarded platform for insightful decision-makers, national security experts, and scholars.

This position collaborates closely with the leadership of the Clements and Robert Strauss Centers, along with the journal's editor-in-chief, the chair of the editorial board, and both editorial and advisory board members. The executive editor oversees the peer review process in coordination with associate editors and works with the production team to prepare accepted manuscripts for publication. This role is essential in maintaining and enhancing TNSR's reputation for providing efficient, constructive feedback and ensuring timely publication. The ideal candidate will be motivated, organized, energetic, and curious about identifying and exploring the most critical questions in national and international security studies.

General Notes

This is a full-time benefits eligible 12-month assignment with the possibility for extension. Must be eligible to work on a full-time basis in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the day-to-day editorial, production, and distribution processes that underpin the journal's intellectual vision and reputation for excellence and relevance, including TNSR's print edition, online edition, and podcast.

  • Works with the editor-in-chief, board chair, editorial/advisory boards, and others to solicit excellent manuscripts from top scholars and policymakers, both emerging and established. Makes timely and constructive decisions on suitability of submissions and solicits peer review feedback in collaboration with the leadership team and associate editors.

  • Acts as an intellectual spokesperson for the journal to academic and policy audiences.

  • Tracks journal metrics, including information on demographics and impact, and produces regular, data-informed reports on TNSR's performance and goals.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant academic discipline (security studies, strategic studies, history, or international relations).

  • At least 5 years of editorial experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Knowledge of current trends and technologies in academic publishing.

  • Experience with peer-review processes and journal management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in editorial processes for both scholarly and public-facing publications is strongly encouraged. Demonstrated success in managing academic journals or similar publications is a plus.

  • Practitioner experience, and/or familiarity with national security policymaking is helpful (military service, civilian government service, think tank work, or some combination thereof).

  • Ability to work collaboratively with wide variety of stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with relevant academic literature.

  • Experience editing scholarly work that crosses disciplines.

  • Experience with the management of projects, workflow processes, and people.

  • Experience managing a journal website and/or podcast is a plus.

  • Willing to challenge the norms of academic publishing where such innovation improves the publication's quality, accessibility, and impact.

Salary

$100,000 + negotiable depending upon experience
