Job Description

Nevada State University invites candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Visual Media. This 9-month, tenure track position will primarily be in animation, either 2D or 3D, although skills in other areas of film and media production are valued. This is also primarily a production position; expertise in film studies is valued as well, but secondary to production skills.

Scholarship is a requirement for tenure-track positions; Nevada State allows for creative scholarship in film or artistic production as fulfilling tenure requirements.

About Visual Media at Nevada State

The Visual Media program includes four concentrations: Animation, 3D Animation, Digital Cinema, and Photo/Documentary. This position will mainly serve the first two, although the four concentrations are integrated in many ways.

The program will feature forward-looking curriculum design in updates to be implemented within the next two years, with greater emphasis on moving students into specialized paths and support for successful portfolio creation. It is also anchored by an innovative theoretical foundation that approaches film and animation from an experiential perspective, and will include a new AI class that will help students navigate the quickly evolving tools and changing media landscape affected by AI.

Other notable classes include Animation Studio, a class introducing students to industry workflows and producing for animation; Physics of Media Creation, which instructs students in the physics of light, optics, sound, and movement as part of the core curriculum; Film Music and Scoring, which introduces students to digital tools and basic music principles, equipping them to score their own works; and Film Festivals and Music Industries, a class tying film festival attendance and package submission into instruction on marketing and promotion.

We also value experiential learning and facilitating networking opportunities for students through trips to CTN and Lightbox, the Sundance Film Festival, and other destinations.

The Visual Media program has small class sizes, with most production classes topping out at twenty seats. We teach using the Adobe Creative Cloud, Blender, Unreal Engine, Storyboard Pro, Reaper, and other software platforms; we are also open to new platforms as introduced by the successful candidate.
