The
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
serves Coloradans by providing high-quality, cost-effective public health and environmental protection services that promote healthy people in healthy places. Staff members focus on evidence-based best practices in the public health and environmental fields and play a critical role in educating people in Colorado so they can make informed choices. In addition to maintaining and enhancing our core programs, the department continues to identify and respond to emerging issues affecting Colorado's public and environmental health.
The Work Unit:
This position is in Water Quality Control Division's Operations Program and within the Communications and Special Projects Unit. This position supports the division's programs with respect to internal and external communications, stakeholder relations, legislative coordination, special projects, and business process enhancements for better transparency and efficiency. What You'll Be Doing
This position fulfills a key strategic role within the division. The Marketing & Communication Specialist III communicates and engages stakeholders in policy, regulation, and technical discussions related to water quality issues. This position will be responsible for designing, developing and editing communication materials, reviewing division-produced reports and other written materials produced by the division, and reviewing and updating division webpages. Duties Include: •Manage logistics of stakeholder engagement activities including scheduling meetings, drafting and distributing stakeholder meeting material and updates, preparing meeting materials, coordinating with staff, and taking meeting notes. •Assist in the development of the meeting design for a broad range of key external stakeholder processes for division staff and management. This includes helping with the design and training of staff for appropriate meeting design, facilitation services as requested, and other assistance as needed. •Identify target audiences for each stakeholder effort, including audiences that may not have previously engaged with the division. •Determine the appropriate method and manner of effective external communications for stakeholder processes. •Develop and maintain communications with stakeholders and staff. •Coordinate in the development of training for division staff to build capacity to run effective stakeholder meetings. This includes leading workshops on effective meetings, communication skills, facilitation, etc. •Work with the supervisor to implement department efforts and policies regarding community engagement and public participation. •Facilitate meetings and communicate effectively with the public, government agencies, elected officials, performance partners, regulated entities, and the media in order to promote and advance the mission of the division. •Ensure that messaging about the division and its initiatives is consistent and adheres to division and department guidelines. •Pursue ongoing professional development opportunities to continue building skills to maintain best practices on effective facilitation, meeting design, and communication strategies.•Support the production of communications materials related to division priorities, including writing, formatting, designing, editing, and proofreading a variety of communications for newsletters, webpages, social media content, public relations, print collateral, promotional materials, messaging, FAQs, etc. •Create materials that effectively communicate complex technical data and regulatory information in a manner that is easily understood by the public, legislature, regulated community, and partners. This typically means translating college-level content to 6-8 great reading level. •Review and copy-edit multiple technical division reports that can be over a hundred pages long. Rewrite technical content so summaries, findings, background information, data, and components are more accessible to the general public. •Develop electronic information (e.g. web, social media, etc.) policies, procedures, guidance, and governance for the division to educate, inform, and engage the public about division programs and services. •Design materials using design programs (e.g. Adobe Suite) so the content is easier to read and more engaging. Design materials such as webpages, social media posts, reports, flyers, email campaigns, internal communications, etc. •Communicate effectively with the public, government agencies, elected officials, regulated entities, and the media in order to promote and advance the mission of the division. Ensure that messaging about the division and its initiatives is consistent and adheres to division and department guidelines. •Represent the communications unit as needed to assist with strategy, messaging, and production of communication materials. * Serving as the backup public information officer for the division. Coordinating with media, working with division staff and department communications to develop messaging for media inquires.
