Position Summary The University of Georgia Press seeks an experienced professional to work with its Editorial, Production, and Design staff. Acting as a liaison with authors, freelancers, and press colleagues, the production editor oversees 20-30 projects per year from manuscript to bound book, especially as such work is related to copyediting, proofreading, and general project organization; and acting as a liaison with press compositors, printers, and press colleagues, assists with the composition and production of 5-10 front-list titles per year. Among tasks that the production editor performs are the following: preparing manuscripts for freelance copyeditors; evaluating and organizing illustrations and permissions; working closely with authors in the review of edited manuscripts and proof and in the preparation of indexes; reviewing the work of freelance copyeditors and proofreaders; preparing edited manuscripts for design and production; proofreading and checking accuracy of proof corrections; editing introductions, indexes, and occasional manuscripts; tracking production schedules; coordinating typesetting and print production as assigned; and reviewing proofs and samples. - Prepares manuscripts and disks for freelance copyeditors, by ensuring house style and guidelines are followed, coding for design, and preparing clear editing instructions for freelancer, according to standard schedules.
- Ensures that page make-up and house style guidelines are followed by proofreading and checking accuracy of proof corrections and denoting any remaining editorial mistakes
- Edit indexes, marketing copy, and occasional manuscripts, on computer, by applying house style and rules of grammar and spelling and ensuring clarity and accuracy of bibliographic data, according to schedule.
- Work closely with authors in the review of edited manuscripts and proof and in the preparation of indexes, by maintaining regular contact, setting deadlines, and providing necessary instructions about the tasks at hand and production more generally
- Manage design and production processes for book manufacturing from composition through completed product, by establishing and tracking production schedules, maintaining communication with composition and print vendors, and reviewing samples and proofs for quality.
- Evaluate and organize illustrations and permissions, thereby ensuring that images meet print reproduction standards; that the proper permissions have been requested and received; that illustration/permission logs are accurate, complete, and easy to understand; and that any problems are reported to the parties involved and solutions found.
- Evaluate manuscript drafts for potential problems, including noting for acquisitions, before transmittal, locations where manuscripts fail to adhere to press guidelines, present serious structural problems, or are missing essential materials.
- Coordinate and review the work performed by freelance copyeditors and proofreaders on assigned projects, by assigning proofreaders according to schedule; advising freelancers regarding the Press's style, editorial approach, and technical requirements; setting deadlines; and evaluating the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of freelancers' work, proving feedback as necessary.
- Prepare edited manuscripts for design and production, by accurately denoting manuscript design codes and/or styles and presenting an organized art program for design.
- Oversee departmental student interns, by selecting best-qualified students, then training them in the basics of manuscript editorial, including knowledge of style manuals, proofreading standards, and file closings, and prioritizing their tasks according to press needs and student abilities.
- Assume other duties related to press relations, publishing, and professional development as assigned, by participating in professional conferences and training as available.
