Summary

Under general supervision of Librarian II, assists in assigned area to provide quality programs, activities, and assistance to customers.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.
Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provides high level of customer service to the public, subordinates, associates, and
    supervisors.
  • Responds to requests for reference information and readers' advisory.
  • Creates, develops, promotes and implements programs and projects in assigned area.
  • Prepares articles and reports.
  • Creates displays to highlight book collections or services.
  • Catalogs library materials, as assigned.
  • May supervise clerical employees and/or volunteers in the performance of their duties
  • Instructs the public in the use of Library resources
  • Assists in selection, maintenance, and the organization of materials in assigned area.
  • Assists customers with utilizing computers.
  • Participates in marketing of library services and materials..

Other Important Duties:
  • Assists and backs up other areas as assigned.
  • May travel to attend meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of library services, programs, research, and resources specific to area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the educational, developmental, and interests levels of different populations served.
  • Knowledge of AACR2, LC Subject Headings, Dewey Classification and MARC formats.
  • Knowledge of customer service methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software to perform data entry, review, retrieval, and research.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in prioritizing, tracking, and managing multiple projects, assignments and duties.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in making formal presentations before audiences of peers or customers.
  • Skill in assisting and providing instructions for children and adults.
  • Skill in utilizing Internet web sites, professional publications, reference, and informational inquiries.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  • Sets example of accuracy, efficiency, and positive attitude.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Master's Degree in Library Science or equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent to an MLS.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check and post-offer physical agility exam.
  • Must possess valid State of Texas Driver's License.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who are proficient in written and verbal Spanish.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • Work is performed in a public library environment.
  • May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk and reach to heights up to 7 ft. with the aid of step stools,,
  • Sits and stands for extended period of time assisting customers with public access catalog training, retrieving materials and answering desk phones.
  • May be subject to working extended hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Must be able to bend or stoop to retrieve for library customers those library materials at ground level.
  • Must be able to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:
  • Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copiers, calculators, fax machines, cash registers, book trucks, multi-line telephone and other standard office equipment.
