Job Summary
Under the direction of a Principal, coordinate and perform a variety of technical library functions at an elementary school site; coordinate acquisition, circulation, distribution and storage of library books, textbooks, audio-visual materials and equipment; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials and access to digital resources; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation.
Job Description / Essential Elements:
LIBRARY /MEDIA TECHNICIAN - ELEMENTARY
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Principal, coordinate and perform a variety of technical and library functions in an assigned elementary school library; coordinate circulation of textbook and library materials; process, shelve, distribute and store textbooks, library books and audio-visual materials; requisition textbooks and student materials; select and requisition library materials; promote and implement the District Library Plan for the access and use of Library information technology to students, teachers and staff; provide general and reference assistance to students and teachers.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Maintain school site library collection; using online resources, conduct regular inventories of the library collection; catalog and process library books and other material online to include importing files from library bibliographic utility resources and vendors; prepare District requisitions for library books, textbooks, periodicals, audio-visual equipment and other instructional materials to include securing price quotes, verifying shipments and monitoring library budgets. E
Coordinate the annual distribution of textbook materials in compliance with the California Education Code Section 35186(f) (the Williams settlement legislation) to ensure a sufficient textbook supply; perform yearly inventory of textbooks in accordance with established timelines; ensure all students have the required textbooks; maintain a record of staff time spent to ensure compliance. E
Schedule and facilitate class visits to the library; present library information to students regarding the use of library resources as developed by the District to meet established information technology standards; collaborate with teachers to prepare and facilitate age and grade-level appropriate library presentations based on information technology standards; introduce genres of literature through book talks and read-alouds. E
Develop school site library collection; evaluate library books for purchase using curriculum standards, book reviews, staff recommendations and online collection analyses of current holdings; assess replacement needs; remove titles based on established weeding techniques. E
Instruct and direct students in locating and selecting desired or needed materials from book shelves or computerized catalog system; assist students in finding suitable reading materials; conduct student and staff library orientations as appropriate. E
Check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books and materials; evaluate and maintain orderliness of shelved materials. E
Provide general and reference assistance to students, staff and teachers; compile thematic lists, reserve and retrieve textbook and library materials; answer reference questions. E
Maintain the library in a neat, orderly and safe condition; assist in maintaining appropriate student behavior in the library. E
Evaluate and maintain library materials; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; maintain records of lost or damaged books. E
Perform general clerical work: enter data and maintain various files and records on a computer; prepare correspondence, compile lists, reports and records as needed. E
Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment, including copier, computer, fax machine and overhead projector. E
Communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of district and outside resources regarding library materials, programs, equipment and supplies. E
Train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants and volunteers. E
Participate in library special events including book fairs and author visits in the library.
Attend and/or facilitate a variety of in-service trainings, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.

or
•48 college/university semester units or equivalent quarter units
and
•two years of paid or volunteer library or media center experience

Requirements / Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college courses in library science; one year of general clerical work in a computerized environment preferably in an educational setting and one year of paid or volunteer library or media center experience. Qualifying coursework or additional related experience may be substituted as meeting the minimum qualifications.
