BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a Library Media Teacher or assigned supervisor, perform technical library functions at a secondary school site, including organization, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and audio/visual materials; check books, textbooks, and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process and shelve library materials and textbooks; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform technical library functions at a secondary school site, including organization, distribution, and storage of library books, textbooks and audio/visual materials; promote student use of the library for research purposes and reading pleasure. E
Oversee the textbook distribution function; receive, issue and control textbook inventory; research vendors and receive price quotes, coordinate textbook deliveries and resolve related issues. E
Assist staff in the selection and requisitioning of library and teacher materials; research and preview new materials; notify teachers of newly-arrived materials applicable to classroom topics or themes; compile lists of potential purchases; type requisitions for the purchase of books, magazines, textbooks and other materials. E
Assist students in researching print and software materials; assist students in locating and selecting materials using the conventional card catalog, computerized catalog system and subject bibliographies; instruct students in proper methods of utilizing the library and computerized reference sources; maintain computerized card catalog. E
Participate in circulation activities; check library materials in and out to students and staff; check and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; shelve returned books, materials and audio-visual equipment; issue library and identification cards; reserve books for students and staff. E
Organize and prepare library displays, decorations and bulletin boards; maintain the library in a neat and orderly condition; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library. E
Input, process and receive library material and textbook orders; prepare materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare labels; affix identification and bar-code labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer database. E
Maintain record of overdue materials and send overdue notices to students and teachers; place holds on student grades for unpaid fines, dues and other monies owed; clear students of library fines, debts and delinquencies; collect books, materials and money and notify appropriate staff of clearance. E
Evaluate and maintain library materials and textbooks; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding or discarding; assess need for replacement or repair; perform minor repairs to damaged books and library materials; maintain records of lost or damaged books. E
Participate in inventory activities as directed; update catalog cards and electronic catalogs to assure accuracy; consult with teachers to provide input regarding obsolete materials. E
Monitor assigned budgets; post library funds to assigned accounts; reconcile and balance assigned accounts; prepare bank deposits; issue checks in accordance with established procedures. E
Perform general clerical work such as typing, duplicating, entering information into a computer and maintaining various files and records; compile, prepare and type correspondence, lists, reports, records and a variety of other materials. E
Operate and maintain a variety of office and instructional equipment, including a typewriter, VCR, copier, computer, fax machine and overhead projector. E
Communicate with a variety of internal and external contacts regarding library materials, equipment and supplies. E
Train and provide work direction and guidance to student assistants and volunteers. E
Participate in the coordination of book fairs and other special events in the library.
Attend a variety of in-service trainings, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.

•48 college/university semester units or equivalent quarter units

SELF-CERTIFICATION OF TYPING/KEYBOARDING SKILLS:
* This classification requires that incumbents be skilled in typing/keyboarding at a minimum of 45 words per minute. A typing test will not be given. Applicants must certify in writing that they have such skills. Demonstrated proficiency will be expected during the probationary period for the class.

Any combination equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent, preferably supplemented by courses in library science; one year of general clerical work in a computerized environment preferably in an educational setting and two years paid or volunteer library or media center experience. Qualifying coursework or additional related experience may be substituted as meeting the minimum qualifications.
