Basic Function
Provide a variety of library services to support the work of Reference and Adult Services in the following areas: Providing direct public service at service desks; Troubleshooting and serving as a liaison with FNSB Digital Services to maintain smooth public access to technology; Creating publicity and promotional content which highlights library offerings.
SALARY: Grade 7A
REPORTS TO: Reference and Adult Services Librarian
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None
Typical Duties
1. Assist patrons in answering reference questions and in effective use of all library services, resources and materials. This includes automated resources, catalogs, library materials, and meeting rooms, printing, technology queries and eMaterials usage.
2. Act as liaison between the library and FNSB Digital Services to monitor known technology issues, place trouble tickets, and facilitate follow-up. Triage and troubleshoot known tech issues in-house when possible. Clean, review, and handle minor equipment maintenance to assure its operational condition.
3. Perform clerical tasks including placing holds on library materials, compiling department statistics monthly, preparing reports, maintaining inventory of public desk supplies and tidiness of desk, and ordering supplies.
4. Support department publicity and promotional needs by working with supervisor to create and maintain program and informational flyers/website spotlights/electronic signage/social media posts and the like.
5. Serve on committees and attend meetings.
6. Assist Librarians in providing training and technical direction to staff especially in relation to public technology and the library website.
7. Assist Librarians in planning, presenting and promoting library programs to adult library patrons.
8. Perform opening and closing procedures. Monitor and facilitate safety, smooth operation, and security of facility and resources; address incidents and issues when able, and report increasingly complex situations to a supervisor as needed.
9. Perform initial interlibrary loan (ILL) searches and route requests to ILL.
10. Other duties as assigned within the scope of assisting library staff with uninterrupted continuity of operations.
Position Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Two (2) years of library experience. Public library experience including providing customer service is preferred. Associate degree in Library Science can substitute for experience.
3. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees and to deal tactfully and courteously with outside entities and the general public.
4. Working knowledge of personal computers including proficient use of Microsoft Word, Publisher, email, Internet and graphic design software such as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud. Basic understanding of a networked system, database searching, personal electronic devices, and library automated circulation systems is preferred.
5. Experience with public programming is preferred.
6. Preferred: Must have and be able to maintain a valid driver's license. Must meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough's insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of automobile insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Ability to deal with the public and staff in a tactful, courteous, and efficient manner.
2. Ability to pay close attention to detail and communicate effectively.
3. Ability to create promotional materials both physical and digital.
4. Knowledge of reference sources and ability to perform research is preferred.
