The Position

Do you love posting on social media? Are you creative, have an eye for eye-catching content and eager to make an impact in your community? The Ontario City Library has an exciting part-time opportunity for a creative, self-motivated individual with a passion for digital storytelling and interested in gaining valuable experience as a Social Media Intern. This position will gain exposure to various aspects of design within a community-centric organization and will collaborate with other staff to bring the library's online presence to life with fresh, fun and engaging visual content across multiple social media platforms for diverse library projects, events and campaigns.

The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge in marketing and social media, demonstrate proficiency in different social media platforms, stay up-to-date with emerging design trends, have a penchant for innovative creativity, and exhibit personal accountability and responsibility. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the Ontario City Library's Mission, Vision and Values as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player"- Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the values of the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Excellence through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way.

The Social Media Intern is a paid, part-time/temporary position scheduled to work on average 19 hours per week but no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

The Community Life and Culture Agency

The City of Ontario's Community Life & Culture Agency endeavors to meet the Ontario City Council goal to "encourage, provide or support enhanced recreational, educational, cultural and healthy city programs, policies and activities." The Ontario City Library has been serving the public as a City department since 1894. The Ovitt Family Community Library and Lewis Family Branch contain over 315,000 items, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audio books, kits and a local history collection. A wide variety of technology is available for the public including internet, several software, eBooks, and state-of-the-art technology through Lightspeed makerspace that offers access to equipment such as 3D printers and a laser cutter. Examples of Essential Functions

The essential functions typically performed by the Social Media Intern assigned to the Library division include the following:

  • Assists with developing and executing results-driven social media strategy.
  • Assists in researching opportunities for new social marketing platforms and adapt processes to fit the Agency needs.
  • Assists in creating engaging content for the City's social media platforms, promotional materials, and public information.
  • Assists with developing and organizing community and media events, public service announcements, press releases, and other publications to promote and publicize agency functions and programs.
  • Works in Adobe Creative Suite; including Illustrator, Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, AfterEffects and Premiere Pro.
  • Assists with photo editing including retouching and correction, compositing, virtual imaging, etc.
  • Assists members of management, professional and technical staff by performing a variety of administrative, and technical projects and assignments.
  • Assists with writing, editing, designing, producing and distributing various pieces of publicity, press releases, videos, or other media for use in print, online, social media, email, direct mail, and other mediums.
  • Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.
  • Engages with the public to promote library services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines

Education

Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major course work in Marketing, Videography, Communications or a closely related field.

Licenses

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment are required.

Desirable

Interested in pursuing a career in the field of marketing, digital media, videography, or a closely related field.
Previous experience using Apple products.
Previous experience creating/editing social media content (personal, professional, or academic).
Bilingual in Spanish.
