Position Overview
Programming & Reference Librarian
Expected Hiring Range: $71,340-$89,175
Leads the development and implementation of impactful public programming and services for adults, aligning with the library’s mission to foster lifelong learning and community engagement. Oversees strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, and resource allocation for adult programs. Serves as a key representative of the library, collaborating with stakeholders, mentoring staff, and driving innovative initiatives that position the library as a vital community resource.
Adult Programming
- Leads development, plans, and implements small and large-scale programs, workshops and events for adults that are inclusive, accessible, promote lifelong learning, and meet the needs of the many locals, guests, and tourists in the community.
- Stays current with best practices in library programming and community engagement and actively seeks to maintain a varied calendar of events and balanced schedule of programs year-round.
- Evaluates success and impact of programs using attendance data and community feedback and makes recommendations for future programs.
- Coordinates logistics including scheduling, resource allocations, and materials. Hosts all programs including room setup, and refreshments.
- Establishes and collaborates with community organizations, schools, and local businesses to enhance program offerings and build local partnerships.
- Oversees and promotes programs through various channels by producing publicity releases, flyers, updating library website and local advertisements via the online monthly events calendar, social media, radio station, newspaper, etc. Ensure consistent branding.
- Develops and manages adult programming budget, keeps a record of expenditures, and contacts.
- Advises the Director of Library Services on long-term strategic goals and resource planning for adult programming and services.
Public Service
- Provides exceptional customer service to all library customers while working at the service desk. Handles check-ins, check-outs, renewals, reader’s advisory, and reference assistance, and provides Vail visitors and guests with local tourist information.
- Advocates for the library and promotes library programs and services.
- Responsible for all Community Room bookings and usage of the AV equipment.
- Responsible for booking local artists for art in the community room and arranging the time of set up and take down.
- Maintains rotating display calendar for staff to curate displays in the library.
Technology and Training
- Trains, supervises, mentors, establishes work schedule for one library tech who provides reference and programming support.
- Regularly updates the images on the Galleria TV to advertise library programs and services (OptiSign).
- Provides technology assistance to the public in the use of E-devices and collaborates with the Library Operations Manager to develop technology training for library staff.
- Assists the public with online databases, digital collections including E-books, and internet searching.
- Posts on social media (Facebook, Instagram) as necessary for library programs and services.
- Models reference services for all staff and may assist in developing reference training for library staff.
Additional Functions
- Attends professional library conferences, seminars, and workshops; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions; completes special projects and tasks when requested.
- Serve the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all of the Town of Vail's core values.
- Perform the job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills / Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Reference & Circulation-related functions.
- Working knowledge of computer applications for library services.
- Ability to work effectively & communicate with library staff as well as patrons in a pleasant, courteous manner.
- Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies in Public Service in a library setting.
- Ability to work well with patrons of all ages, both individually and in groups.
- Knowledge of standard library procedures, current info technology, database search capabilities, library procedures, and policies.
Education, Experience:
A Masters Degree in Library and Information Science preferred from an ALA accredited school, and 3-5 years of increasingly responsible library work, preferably in adult programming and reference services.
