PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Associate Communication Strategist supports the Office of Communications across a range of activities and products, including website content management, writing/editing articles and blogs, social media management, media relations, analytics reports, planning/executing outreach events, and managing internal company communications such as drafting company emails, FAQs, and newsletters. The Associate Communications Strategist will provide administrative support to help manage Office of Communications operations.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND / OR DUTIES

  • Work with web developers to monitor, maintain, and update the external CNA website; updates the internal SharePoint.
  • Assist creative and technical staff in developing updates to the company's website, including documentation auditing, page updates, and design. Update external website content, including news, information, event announcements, and company information.
  • Work with colleagues to develop and post social media content.
  • Plan and post content to CNA’s other digital platforms.
  • Update the team Content Calendar for long-range communication planning.
  • Assist with media relations and media outreach efforts, including developing proactive media strategies, writing/editing news releases, engaging journalists, conducting media training, and responding to media requests for interviews and information.
  • Write, edit, and update articles, publications, presentations, and other materials, communicating a clear and effective message to various audiences. Follows AP and Chicago style to develop well-written articles that tell a compelling story.
  • Produce CNA’s internal newsletter, to include planning content, compiling and editing content submitted by CNA staff, and writing original articles on company happenings.
  • Monitor various online media outlets for CNA news and compile into reports.
  • Assist with all aspects of planning and execution of outreach engagements, to include in person and virtual/hybrid events. Conducts research to build custom event invite lists composed of subject matter experts (SME) related to the event topic (Congress, media, think tanks, academia, industry, government, military). Uses event software management tools to build events registration landing pages, send out invites, manage and track guest lists, and email guests follow-up information. Coordinates and manages logistics related to both in-person and virtual events such as print collateral, presentations, media set up, and all other aspects of event promotion.
  • Monitor, track, and measure effectiveness of communication activities. Assist in developing analytics reports with key takeaways and recommendations tied to website, email, and social media metrics, including delivery/open rates, clicks, page views, bounce rate, report downloads, and exit rates. Ability to glean insight into meaning and impact of metrics tied to CNA Centers/Divisions as well as specific tactics like blog press releases, reports, and podcast.
  • Supports team administrative duties such as monitoring shared email inboxes, responding to queries, setting up meetings, and compiling weekly activity reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in corporate communications, journalism, public relations or related function. Experience working in government Communications or Public Affairs a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent written and oral communications skills; strong writer and editor with firm grasp of AP/Chicago style. Ability to independently write high-quality articles with little/no oversight.
    • Knowledge of web content architecture and applications. Demonstrated ability in content management of external and internal websites.
    • Demonstrated experience in monitoring, compiling, and analyzing communication metrics in visually appealing analytics reports with charts, graphs, and written key takeaways. Knowledge in using native platforms and software to collect analytics.
    • Demonstrated ability in event planning, to include developing custom SME invite lists, managing event invitation and registration process, coordinating with speakers/panelists on talking points/presentations, running Zoom/Teams webinars, and coordinating hard copy and/or digital promotion materials.
    • Demonstrated technical competence in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Pro; experience using communications software tools such as Critical Mention, Sprout Social, Google Analytics, HubSpot, Canva, and Constant Contact; experience using Adobe Creative Suite a plus but not required.
    • Knowledge in compiling and distributing communications products such as media reports, journalist lists, newsletters, and other messaging/materials.
    • Strong organization and project management skills to effectively track a high volume of information and tasks.
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to problem solve and assess a variety of situations to proactively provide recommendations for best courses of action.
    • Demonstrated expertise in cutting-edge and emerging communication trends and tools.
  • Hybrid Work Eligibility: This position is eligible for telecommuting or hybrid work arrangements at the discretion of the Supervisor. Employees may be required to work at CNA headquarters or other work locations resulting in changes to the scheduled telecommuting or hybrid work arrangements.
