The State Journal-Register in Springfield -- Illinois' capital city -- is seeking a top-notch journalist and thinker to be its next Editorial Engagement Editor. The Editorial Engagement Editor is responsible for curating a vibrant opinion/editorial section, both online and in print. Responsibilities include:
- Researching and writing editorials that represent the voice of the paper's editorial board.
- Recruiting and selecting guest columns on state/local issues.
- Selecting letters to the editor.
- Organizing and inviting interest groups wishing to make policy presentations to the editorial board.
- Coordinating the paper's endorsement interview process during election season.
- Engaging politely and responsively with the public.
- Coordinating online engagement efforts to drive web traffic to editorials and opinion pieces.
The ideal candidate must be a critical thinker without preconceived ideological biases, a strong researcher, and a clear, direct, and persuasive writer. Knowledge of state government issues is critical. At least five years of professional experience is required; this is not an entry-level position. Other highly desirable attributes include:
- Strong social media skills.
- Exceptional organizational and planning skills.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- Past copy editing experience.
