About the Organization/Business:

The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) was founded in 1929 within the College of Arts and Science by Jesse Lee Rader. The first degree programs offered were the Bachelor of Arts in Library Science, Master of Library Science, and the Master of Arts in Library Science. Both Master’s programs were conferred accreditation by the American Library Association in 1956. The name was changed to the School of Library and Information Studies in 1990 to reflect the expanding role of the School in the information age. The School continues to offer the only ALA-accredited Library and Information Studies program in Oklahoma.

The SLIS at the University of Oklahoma (OU) invites applications for 2 full-time, Renewable Term Lecturer positions (9-month academic year contract with 3 months summer required) to teach in the Master of Arts in Museum Studies program. These faculty positions will begin in January 2025 (spring semester) or August 2025 (fall semester). Faculty members will be expected to move to the area (this is not a remote position).

The Master of Arts in Museum Studies is delivered in an online and asynchronous format. The standard distribution of effort for RT positions is 80% teaching and 20% service with a 4:4 (9-mo.) or 4:4:2 (12-mo.) teaching load, or equivalency. This position is 80% teaching with a load of 8 classes per year, typically on a 3 fall, 3 spring, and 2 summer schedule. The remaining 20% is service within the department and university.

Successful candidates will have a specialization in Museum Studies and the ability to teach two or more of the following specializations:

  • Museum Management, Administration, Leadership within a Science, Natural history, or Technology Museum
  • Museum Collection Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Management within a Science, Natural History or Technology Museum
  • Technology for museum professionals (including website development, database management, and/or emerging technologies such as virtual reality for visitor experiences, makerspaces, 2D/3D scanning)
  • Digital collections (including digitization, metadata development, use of various technologies to develop digital collections)
  • Audience engagement and programming in science, natural history, or technology museums

Faculty responsibilities include:

  • Instruction at the graduate level
  • Supervising student independent courses and projects
  • Contributing to systematic planning and development within SLIS, including attending faculty meetings
  • SLIS committee membership and other SLIS service assignments

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. with a focus on Museum Studies. Museum Studies is a multidisciplinary field, so applicants may come from a number of the following disciplines: Library and Information Science, History, Anthropology, Geology, Fine Arts, and others.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching graduate students
  • Experience teaching in an online, asynchronous format
