Salary: Placement on the Teacher's Salary Scale according to education and experience.
Organizational Relationship
Directly responsible to the Principal in matters related to the building. Jointly responsible to the Principal, the Supervisor of Music, and the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning.
Job Summary
Promote learning and growth of all students by providing high-quality instruction, authentic and meaningful student assessments, analyzing student data, and using data to improve instruction. Maintain instructional practices that establish high expectations, create a safe learning environment, and demonstrate cultural proficiency.
Performance Responsibilities
- Teaches music classes.
- Promotes school music and music activities (both curricular and extracurricular) for students, staff, and parents.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and engages students in learning experiences.
- Provides differentiated learning experiences to enable all students to progress toward meeting intended outcomes.
- Designs units of instruction with measurable outcomes and tasks requiring higher-order thinking skills.
- Designs and administers assessments to measure each student's learning and growth.
- Organizes and analyzes assessment results to adjust practice and identify appropriate interventions for all students.
- Provides descriptive feedback and engages students and families in constructive conversations about performance improvement.
- Defines high expectations for the quality of student work and promotes perseverance.
- Develops and maintains an effective learning environment.
- Prepares for classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with student needs.
- Encourages students to maintain standards of classroom behavior.
- Maintains a safe physical and intellectual environment where students can take academic risks.
- Shares conclusions about student progress with appropriate colleagues and seeks feedback.
- Maintains open lines of communication with students and parents.
- Updates parents on curriculum and suggests strategies for supporting learning.
- Shows understanding of different families' home language, culture, and values.
- Strives to implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals.
- Takes necessary precautions to protect students and materials.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required.
- Upholds school rules and policies.
- Available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside instructional hours.
- Reflects on effectiveness of lessons and seeks to improve practice.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
- Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
- Demonstrates sound judgment and protects student confidentiality.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the building principal.
Qualifications
- Licensed as a Music Teacher (Grades K-5) by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Required.
- Evidence of training in Curriculum and methods for Music Education.
- Psychology in child and/or adolescent growth and development.
- Proficiency in Music Education as evidenced through undergraduate transcripts.
- Strong knowledge of John Feierabend’s Conversational Solfege preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Elementary Choral Methods preferred.
- Graduate work in Music Education preferred.
- Strong piano proficiency preferred.
- Knowledge of General Music methods and materials.
- Experience with General Music Classes preferred.
- Awareness of Discipline Based Arts Education processes.
- SEI Endorsement preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese) a plus.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate.
