Pay Period: 16th - 15th of the following month
Pay Date: Last working day of the month
Min Hourly Rate: $14.20 (Standard); $13.20 (Non-Urban); $15.45 (Portland Metro)
Max Hourly Rate: $21.00 (Standard); $20.50 (Non-Urban); $21.50 (Portland Metro)
Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill multiple part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Photographer positions for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU). The Photographer is responsible for pitching, researching and photographing stories for The Daily Barometer, Beavers Digest, or DAMchic, including print and online, as required by the editor-in-chief of the publications or the OMN Photo Chief.
Position Duties
Responsibilities:
- Pitches, accepts and delivers photos that either stand alone or accompany content for OMN
- Works with OMN writers to accurately and fully reflect stories of news value to the OSU community
- Provides fair and accurate coverage that represents the story and the people involved
- Pursues news in a timely fashion
- Suggests story, photo and/or video coverage to enhance story presentation online
- Covers breaking news as needed
- Attends all staff and team meetings as required by editor(s)-in-chief
- Writes accurate captions in AP style
- Able to act as mentors to new hires
- Other duties as assigned by the adviser
Communication:
- Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
- Ensure you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basescamp, Discord, etc.)
- Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
Leadership:
- Follow all OMN policies and procedures
- Act professionally at all times
- Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

- Is knowledgeable in photo news gathering and fact-checking strategies
- Willing to learn AP Style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics
- Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks
- Able to meet deadlines
- Is a strong communicator and comfortable with public speaking
- Is organized and reliable
- Is comfortable giving and receiving feedback
- Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
- Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with sources, stakeholders, partners, collaborators and the community
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The Photographer employment dates:
- Sept. 9 2024 – May 31, 2025
Full Start: Photo assignments follow a schedule as assigned:
- $48 per standard assignment
