Max Hourly Rate: $21.00 (Standard); $20.50 (Non-Urban); $21.50 (Portland Metro)
Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Justice, Equity and Diversity Beat Reporter position for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU). The OMN Justice, Equity and Diversity reporter is responsible for researching, pitching and writing/creating content specific to issues surrounding justice, equity, diversity and belonging on Oregon State University’s campus. Content will be published both in print and online, as assigned by the editors-in-chief of The Barometer, Beaver’s Digest or DAMchic.
Position Duties
Responsibilities:
- Connect and build relationships with individuals and communities whose focus is equity, inclusion, belonging and justice.
- Meet with various individuals/organizations in person or via email, phone or Zoom a minimum of once each week to develop story ideas.
- Create for publication a minimum of two pieces of content each week.
- Work with photographers and designers to enhance content through photos, graphics and multimedia.
- Attend all cohort meetings as required by editor(s) in chief; communicate attendance plans in advance.
- Participate in readouts with editors to make any necessary revisions in style or content.
- Act in a professional manner at all times and create and maintain collegial working relationships.
- Other duties as assigned by the editor.
Communication
- Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN.
- Work 10 regular office hours each week for Orange Media Network.
- Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur.
Leadership
- Follow all OMN policies and procedures.
- Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion.
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
Additional Required Qualifications
- Has had prior reporting experience.
- Willing to learn AP Style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics.
- Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks.
- Able to meet deadlines.
- Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking.
- Is organized and reliable.
- Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The Justice, Equity and Diversity Beat Reporter’s employment dates:
- Onboarding: TBD; will include training on cultural literacy specific to media coverage.
- Full Start: Sept. 9, 2024-May 31, 2025.
Pay Rate:
Full Start: 10 hours per week, $638 per month.
